THE HISTORY OF ASEAN
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or
ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in
Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN
Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding
Fathers of ASEAN, namely Indonesia, Malaysia,
Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. This regional
grouping was founded to promote economic
growth, social progress and cultural development
in South East Asian Region through multilateral
cooperation.

THE AIMS OF ASEAN

As set out in the ASEAN Declaration, the aims


and purposes of ASEAN are: To accelerate the
economic growth, social progress and cultural
development in the region through joint
endeavors in the spirit of equality and
partnership in order to strengthen the foundation
for a prosperous and peaceful community of
Southeast Asian Nations.
THE AIMS OF ASEAN
To promote regional peace and stability through abiding
respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship
01 among countries of the region and adherence to the
principles of the United Nations Charter.

02 To promote active collaboration and mutual assistance on


matters of common interest in the economic, social,
cultural, technical, scientific and administrative fields.

To provide assistance to each other in the form of training


03 and research facilities in the educational, professional,
technical and administrative spheres.
THE AIMS OF ASEAN
To collaborate more effectively for the greater utilization
04 of their agriculture and industries, the expansion of their
trade, including the study of the problems of
international commodity trade, the improvement of their
transportation and communications facilities and the
raising of the living standards of their peoples

05 To promote Southeast Asian studies.

To maintain close and beneficial cooperation with existing


06 international and regional organizations with similar aims
and purposes, and explore all avenues for even closer
cooperation among themselves.

In their relations with one another, the
ASEAN Member States have adopted the
following fundamental principles, as
contained in the Treaty of Amity and
Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) of 1976:

THE FLAG OF ASEAN
THE FLAG OF ASEAN
• The ASEAN Flag is a symbol of Member States’ unity and support for the
principles and endeavors of ASEAN and is a means to promote greater ASEAN
awareness and solidarity.
• The ASEAN Flag represents a stable, peaceful, united and dynamic ASEAN. The
colors of the Flag – blue, red, white and yellow – represent the main colors of the
flags of all the ASEAN Member States.
• The blue represents peace and stability. Red depicts courage and dynamism,
white shows purity and yellow symbolizes prosperity.
• The stalks of padi in the center of the Emblem represent the dream of ASEAN’s
Founding Fathers for an ASEAN comprising all the countries in Southeast Asia,
bound together in friendship and solidarity.
• The circle represents the unity of ASEAN.
• The ASEAN Flag is the reserved copyright of ASEAN.
THE FLAG OF ASEAN
• The specifications of the ASEAN Flag are annexed.
• The ASEAN Flag shall be treated with respect and shall not be subjected to any
indignity.
• ASEAN Member States shall use the ASEAN Flag in the manner specified under
these guidelines that include the following
• The ASEAN Flag shall be displayed at all ASEAN National Secretariats.
• The ASEAN Flag shall be displayed on a permanent basis at Diplomatic and
Consular Missions of ASEAN Member States alongside the national flag. The
ASEAN Flag shall be displayed by the ASEAN Member States in third countries
which are recognized by all ASEAN Member States.
• The ASEAN Flag shall be displayed during ASEAN meetings, ASEAN Day
Celebrations, ceremonies and functions held in Member States.
THE MOTTO OF ASEAN

The motto of ASEAN is

“One Vision, One


Identity, One
Community”.
THE PILLARS OF ASEAN
The three pillars of the ASEAN Community,
namely the

ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC)

ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the;

ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC)

These are the most crucial areas deemed


necessary for the progress and evolution of
ASEAN and its peoples.
ASEAN SUMMIT
The ASEAN Summit is a semiannual meeting
held by the members of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in relation to
economic, political, security, and socio-cultural
development of Southeast Asian countries. In
addition, it serves as a prominent regional (Asia)
and international (worldwide) conference, with
world leaders attending its related summits and
meetings to discuss various problems and global
issues, strengthening cooperation, and making
decisions. The summit has been praised by world
leaders for its success and ability to produce
results on a global level.
ASEAN SUMMIT
Under the ASEAN Charter, the ASEAN Summit is
the supreme policy-making body of ASEAN. It
comprises the heads of state or government of
each member state. Accordingly, the
Chairmanship of ASEAN rotates annually, based
on the alphabetical order of the English names of
ASEAN member states. The member state
assuming the Chairmanship holds it for one
calendar year, and chairs the ASEAN Summit and
related summits, the ASEAN Coordinating
Council, the three ASEAN Community Councils,
relevant ASEAN Sectoral Ministerial Bodies and
senior officials, and the Committee of Permanent
Representatives.
ASEAN SUMMIT
In addition, the Secretary General of the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations is
appointed by the ASEAN Summit, selected from
among nationals of ASEAN member states based
on alphabetical rotation. The Chairmanship of
ASEAN for 2019 is held by Thailand.

The 1st ASEAN Summit was held in February


1976 in Bali, Indonesia. At this summit, ASEAN
expressed its readiness to "develop fruitful
relations" and mutually beneficial cooperation
with other countries of the region.
