Qualitative Quantitative
• Explore the meaning of
people’s… • To examine the relationship
between variables

cultures
a particular issue/
case
VARIABLES = a characteristics

INDEPENDENT EXTRANEOUS

Characteristics that are

manipulated by the researcher Extra characteristics (age, sex,
race etc)
Characteristics impacted by
independent variables

hands!
You got pee/
poo on them!
•What is the independent variable in
this study? Dependent variable?
Extraneous variable?
Research Questions
Qualitative Quantitative
• Exploratory • RQs “What” “How”… “ Does”
• RQs “What” “How” • DESCRIPTIVE Research..
Examples: How much? How often? What is
the difference? What is the

Quantitative
• Collects more than 1 kind of • Data as numbers
data in each study
• Data in the form of words • From instruments
• Interviews, documents,
observations and audio-visual
materials
• “from the field”… the natural
settings where participants are
• Researcher is the instrument
• Emergent design
• Methods change during the study
ANALYSIS
Qualitative Quantitative

• Creating themes • Statistics to crunch the

• Researchers look through all numbers
the data and organize it into • Deductive…data formed with
themes use of theory or established
• Takes a lot of time views on stuff
• Inductive… data formed
without the use of theory or
established views on stuff
FINAL REPORT
Qualitative Quantitative

• Narrative • More rigid

• Interpretative • Statistical report
• A lot of writing
• Contains direct quotes from
the participants
