NAS benefits
 IntelliSnap for NetApp software creates a NetApp® Snapshot® copy and indexes the
contents
 Indexing uses NetApp SnapDiff API
 Indexing is optional for NAS data (deferred indexing)
 Incremental backups run incremental indexing and improve indexing performance
 When using both full and incremental backups, the index is maintained, even if the full backup is
aged off
 During a full backup, the existing index is copied and modified to create a new index
 The new index is incrementally updated with the changes in the current full backup

 The NetApp array is the client

 Directories, files, or qtrees can be restored as needed
 The volume revert option is available using NetApp SnapRestore® software
 Single-file SnapRestore is supported (LUN is restored as a file)

7 © 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. NetApp Confidential – Limited Use
NAS benefits (cont.)
 Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) backup to tape uses dump or SMTape
to move the data to the tape or disk target
 LUN is backed up as a file in NDMP-based backup

 Supports cluster-aware backup extension

 Supports local, three-way, and remote backup topologies
 Enables tape discovery through cluster management LIF
 Allows data movement through either data LIF or intercluster LIF
 Set the preference in NDMP options

 Supports block-level increment

 NAS browse for SVM subclient content

 Replicate in a cascaded fashion Copy to tape

 Back up by creating a NetApp Snapshot® copy and indexing the LUN contents
 Replicate with automated provisioning and catalog awareness

IntelliSnap for LUN data

 Backing up LUN data requires a file system iDataAgent on the client system that is
accessing the LUN
 The file system data is quiesced (Windows Volume Copy Shadow Service) and a
NetApp® Snapshot® copy of the NetApp volume is created
 Mirroring and vaulting and movement to tape are supported
 For consistent replication, vaulting uses the Snapshot copy created by NetApp
SnapProtect® technology
 LUN clones are created and used during indexing operations

VMware deployments on NetApp storage

 Commvault IntelliSnap for NetApp supports FC,

iSCSI, and NFS deployments of VMware
 Applications such as Microsoft SQL and
Exchange can be consistently backed up by
using the virtual server agent (only if the
applications are installed in a virtual machine
disk)
 Other applications require specific agents
running inside a virtual machine to perform
application-consistent backups

Hyper-V deployments on NetApp storage

 Commvault IntelliSnap for NetApp supports FC,

iSCSI, and SMB 3 deployments of Microsoft Hyper-V
 All applications require specific agents running inside
a virtual machine (VM) to perform application-
consistent backups

Proxy for VMware backups

MediaAgent
(VSA) NetApp®  A proxy is used to mount the NetApp Snapshot®
CommServe OnCommand® copies (the proxy should be managed by the same
VMware vCenter as in production)
 Virtual machines (VMs) are off-loaded to another
VMware ESXi host (proxy) to perform indexing
operations
Proxy  Production servers are not taxed for performance
ESX host
 Restoration can also be performed through a proxy
host
 MediaAgent (VSA) can be virtual for iSCSI- or NFS-
NFS/FC type datastores
Datastore  To set up a complete FC SAN environment, the
MediaAgent (VSA) must be a physical server
 Establish a connection iSCSI/FC to the SVM hosting
Production
ESX host the LUN so that the Commvault application can create
the mapping and mount the LUN (lun clone) on to
the proxy

VMware RDM and Hyper-V pass-through disks
Raw device mapping (RDM)

 RDM support
 Data in RDMs cannot be protected using the virtual server agent (VSA)
 To protect data in RDMs (VMware and Hyper-V), you must use a file system agent or application
agent within the guest OS
 VMware RDM must be in physical mode (virtual mode is not supported)
 VMware RDM can be iSCSI or FC (for FC, a physical proxy is required)
 FC pass-through disks are not yet supported for Hyper-V

 Client direct-attached iSCSI (instead of RDM) is also supported

Hardware revert (NetApp SnapRestore software)

 Hardware revert can be performed for

FC- and iSCSI-type datastores
 This option is available by right-clicking
the NetApp® Snapshot® copy
 Before performing a hardware revert, the
LUN must be unmounted from the
VMware ESXi
 After the hardware revert is complete,
the respective LUN should be properly
mounted

Tape backup (remote copy to tape)
When backing up VMware data to tape at a remote site, the sProxyESX registry key must be
added to the remote virtual server agent proxy to specify the IP or host name of the remote proxy
ESXi server.

Microsoft SQL Server failover cluster instance

 The Microsoft SQL Server iDataAgent manages backup and

restore operations and is installed on all nodes of the cluster

Failover cluster
 You can back up database, file, and file groups
 The backup operation is always performed through the active

node of the cluster
FC/iSCSI

 The restore operation is copy-based

 Point-in-time restore operation
 Restore without recovery
 Out-of-place restore

Note: System databases are essential for the operation of the SQL Server instance. If you need to restore the SQL Server in a
system failure, the system databases (master, msdb, and model) must be backed up.
