HISTORY OF INDIA
 Indian civilization is ancient,

 The Indus Valley Civilization was one of the


first civilizations on earth,

 The Vedic period was a time in Indian history


when the Hindu religion and caste system
began in India.

 Mughal Empire was the last and the


strongest Islamic empire in India.
• Total population: 1.06 billion people

• 72% in Rural areas

• Religion: Hindu 81.3%, Muslim 12%, Christian


2.3%, Sikh 1.9%, other groups including Buddhist,
Jain, Parsi 2.5% ( AC TO 2000 ss report)

• 41.6% of the total Indian population in India are


Below Poverty Line.

• 75% of the poor are in rural areas, most of them


are daily wagers, self-employed householders ,
and landless labourers.

• There are 1,652 living languages in India.

• Two official languages of communication:


– Hindi and English

• There are “official languages“ at the state and


centre but no one “national language“.

• There are 22 or 24 regional languages.

• India is called the land of festivals and fairs
• There are many different festivals because of
the varied religions

• Seafood
• Meat-however, cows are considered sacred
by Hindus, many of whom are vegetarian
• Masala-spices
• Tea-common drink
Music
• Variety of folk, popular, pop, classical music.
• Based and influenced by Hindu texts.
• Was developed over many eras.
• Remains instrumental to religious inspiration,
cultural expression and pure entertainment
• Ethnic groups, Persian, Arabic and English music had
an impact on it.
Instruments

• Various string and wind instruments are


usual (Sitar).
• Several kinds of drums
and cymbals.
Dance
• There is the lot of classical dances.
• Every dance represents a different culture and
ethos of a region or group.
• Often based on Hindu traditions at religious
events.

1). Bhangra of the Punjab
2). Bihu of the Assam
