“Shear resistance of RC circular members with FRP discrete hoops

versus Spirals”
Author Name:- Ahmed H. Ali, Hamdy M. Mohamed, Omar Chaallal, Brahim Benmokrane, Faouzi Ghrib
Published Date:- 17 july 2018

Objectives
Compare the experimental data on the shear strength of FRP
(glass) with hoops and spirals shear reinforced circular
sections.
Procedure
Circular RC specimens including 2 reinforced with GFRP bars
and hoops, two reinforced with GFRP bars and spirals, one
with longitudinal CFRP bars and spirals, and one with steel
bars and spirals were tested to determine their shear
resistance.

and instrumentation of the test specimens. 19
Methodology
 The specimens were loaded in four-point bending.
 Deflection was measured with LVDTs placed at the mid-
span and at mid-shear span.
 Strains was measured by electrical-resistance strain
gauges.

• The higher failure load, the greater the number of induced diagonal
shear cracks.
• The GFRP hoops reached higher load levels compared to the specimens
reinforced with GFRP spirals.
• Decreasing the GFRP spirals or hoops spacing enhanced the shear
behaviour.

• The failure load of GFRP-100 hoop is 965 KN and GFRP-150 hoop is 887

FRP hoops’ and spirals’ shear strength

Fig 12:- Spiral and hoop shear plane.

In spirally circular reinforced concrete member, only a component of the force in the
closed or helical link can resist shear forces due to the geometric curvature of the
hoops and spirals reinforcement, respectively. This reduces their efficiency in
comparison to rectangular stirrups.

Fig 13:- Shear Load
• Shear capacity of specimens with GFRP hoops was increased 9% by increasing
the GFRP-hoop-reinforcement ratio from 0.34 to 0.51.

• Increasing the GFRP-spiral-reinforcement ratio from 0.34 to 0.51 increased the

shear capacity of the specimens with GFRP spirals by 13%.

Conclusion
A. The specimens with GFRP hoops reached higher load levels compared to the
specimens reinforced with GFRP spirals.

B. A small reduction in the stiffness was observed in specimens with spirals at the
formation of the diagonal shear crack.

C. GFRP hoops helped maintain the stiffness up to higher load levels compared to
the corresponding specimens with GFRP spirals.

D. Increasing the GFRP hoop reinforcement ratio from 0.34 to 0.51 increased the
shear capacity of the tested specimens by 9%. While, increasing the GFRP-spiral-
reinforcement ratio from 0.34 to 0.51 increased the shear capacity of the
specimens with GFRP spirals by 13%.
