WHAT ARE MINERAL-BASED INDUSTRY?
• Manufacturing industries that use minerals as
raw materials are called mineral based
industries.
• It can be categorized into three types. They
are –
• Metallic industry.
• Non-metallic industry.
• Chemical industry.
Important Mineral-based Industries in
Assam are-

• Coal
• Petroleum(crude)
• Natural Gas (utilized)
COAL INDUSTRY IN
ASSAM
• Existence of coal deposits in Upper Assam had
been known long back since the days of British
occupation.
• Quality of coal found here is not of superior
quality.
• Deposits from both Gondwana and Tertiary
ages can be traced here.

Petroleum Industry In Assam
• Up to 1960s, Assam was the only oil producing
state in the country.
• Assam Railway and Trading Company drilled
14 oil well .
• Assam Oil Company was constituted in 1899.
• Burma Oil company took over the Assam oil
company.
• Set up a new refinery at Digboi.
Petroleum Industry In Assam

• Also found in Barak valley in Badarpur and


Pothoria.
• Presently Oil is found in Naharkatiya, Geleki,
Torajan, Lakhua, Rudrasagar etc.
• Geleki Oil fields are the largest in Assam.
• ONGC and Oil India Ltd are presently involved
in exploration of oil.

Natural Gas Industry in Assam
• Assam accounts for 50% of India's onshore
production of natural gas.
• Almost all the petroleum producing areas of
the upper Brahmaputra contain ‘associated
natural gas'.
• Barak Valley, on the other hand, contains ‘free
natural gas' in the Adamtila structure.

– Namrup Thermal Power Project
– Assam Gas company
