INTRODUCTION:
• GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is a
protocol used to describe the protocols for second-
generation digital cellular networks used in various
devices, primarily mobile phones.
• The advantages of GSM over previous technology is that it
has widespread coverage, economical and faster to name a
few.
• In this project, we aim to use the effectiveness and ease-of-
use of GSM technology to control the switching of Street
lighting system to significantly reduce the energy
consumption and light pollution.
LITERATURE SURVEY
1] “Design of new intelligent control system”, it was observed that by improving street lighting
control computer system composition, working principle and functions the increasing demand
of the modern world can be met by taking relevant measures such as energy-saving and also
environmental-protection, controllable , ease of maintenance.

2] “On the development of a wireless self-localising street light monitoring system” , the
novelty of the proposal of a wireless network for street light remote control is discussed. In
particular, simple prototypes have been built using commercial hardware. The capability of the
ranging measurements, is mainly concentrated.

3] It was observed that the faulty conditions of the bulbs are detected by using light dependant
resistor attached close to the street lights. It was even implemented in street lights in some
rural and urban areas.

4] Many companies working on low power consumption system with more reliability and high
energy efficiency has been basis for most of the journals and present technology is giving way
to more number of research in electrical field and the smart automation systems have proven
track record to provide safety, more affordable lightning.
PROBLEM DEFINITION AND OBJECTIVE:

1. An increase in environmental concerns in the recent days

has called for reduction in energy consumption without any
hampering of utility.
2. Instead of restricting our comforts, efforts must be made to
save energy by checking the various means when it is
counterproductive.
3. The street lights in India and many other countries are left in
ON condition during the entire night and in some areas it is
left like that even throughout the day.
4. The objective is to manage the street lamps when they are
not in working condition by sending messages to GSM
module.
BLOCK DIAGRAM
METHODOLOGY TO BE ADOPTED
• System comprises of server and microcontroller with embedded
sensors for measuring different parameters .
• The analog data sensed by the server is converted into digital
form ; microcontroller processes it and sends to the server.
• User sets all the required parameters for a particular sensor on
street light modules on the server.
• Whenever it is required to switch ON or OFF the system, the
message is sent to the street light modules using GSM module.
• The fault is also detected and the information of the fault at the
specific location can be found out through GSM technology.
POSSIBLE OUTCOME
• The intelligent system for managing the power of the street
lamps and the detection of the faults is achieved.
• The switching operation of the street lights is made easy by
sending the messages and the rectification of the fault is
made sooner.
• Through this GSM technology, the manual switching
discrepancy is overcome.
• Hence reliable, far reaching access of the system for the
street light control is obtained by the user and is made
economical.
HARDWARE TO BE USED
• MICROCONTROLLER
• GSM mobile phone
• Lamps
APPLICATIONS
• It can be used widely in local street light switching and
control of the same with effective fault detection system.
• This technology can even be implemented in traffic signal
monitoring.
• Automatic sensing through GSM technique makes it
possible to enforce in systems where protection and
security is a major concern.
• For 24 hours online monitoring of the complex systems in
hospitals, industries etc.
• Even the thermal power plants for supervising some parts
and in solar power plants for continuous data collection of
proper working of panel.
