• INDUS VALLEY CIVILISATION

• * POLITY OF IVC
There is no clarity that who ruled IVC. One group of historian
believed that it was ruled by Priestly class while majority of the
historian believed that it was ruled by group of merchants. (
HARAPPAN CIVILISATION )
Society of IVC
• There is no clarity regarding the authority in this society.
• Some group of historian believed that society was patriarchal in
nature and they cite the example of Priest which was invariably given
to males.
• The other group of historian believed that it was matriarchal and they
gave example of abundance of images of mother goddess. But it can
be safely concluded that IVC was unequal and classbased.
Economy during IVC
• Indus valley people maintained trade relations with Mesopotamia ,
Dilmun ( Bahrain ) , Makran Coast of Iran, Afghanistan, Oman and kolar
area of south India.
• Cotton and wheat was the most important commodity traded from
Indus valley to these area which are mentioned above.
• Indus valley people imported mercury, copper, gold, silver, tin and
other semi precious stones like Carnelian, Amethyst and Lapis Lazuli
from above mentioned area.
• Chanhudaro and Kalibangan were the important industrial places and
textile were created in most of the town in IVC.
• Crops cultivated by Indus Valley Civilisation are
1) Wheat – Arabs called it Sindon
2) Barley
3) Pea
4) Mustard etc.

Lion and horse were not known to IVC.
