How the Butterflies came to be
 One day after Earth- Maker
shaped the world, Litoi, our Elder
Brother, was sitting and watching
the children play. Haw the joy and
youthfulness they displayed. He
saw the beauty of their
surroundings. He smelled the fresh
fragrance of the trees and the
flowers.
He heard the happy songs of the
birds.
He
Looked
Up the
Blue sky.
He saw the women as they
ground cornmeal. He saw
their beauty and the sunlight
as it shone from their hair.
These were wonderful
things.
But the elder Brother realized
and weaken
that these things would
transform. He knew that these
children would all grow old and
weaken and die. The women
would someday grow fat and
ugly, and their beautiful black
hair would turn gray.
The leaves would turn brown,
and the freshness of flowers
would fade. The days would
grow short and the night
would grow colder. Elder
Brother’s heart grew sad and
troubled.
AsHe saw the women grind
the cornmeal, the wind made
some fallen leaves dance in
the sunlight. He decided to do
something that would capture
the wonderful things he saw.
He decided to make
something that everyone
could enjoy.
Sohe took his bag of
creation and began to
gather some things together.
He took some blue from the
sky, some white from the
cornmeal, some spots from the
sunlight, and the blackness of
the beautiful women’s hair.
Healso took the yellow of
the falling leaves and the
green of the pine needles.
He gathered the red, purple,
and orange from the flowers.
He put all things in his bag of
creation and put the bird’s
song too in it.
Elder brother then called the
children and the women
together. He asked them to
open his bag of creation and
there flew out the butterflies
with all the beautiful colors.
They look like flowers
dancing in the wind.
Aseveryone was rejoicing,
the song bird asked Elder
brother, “Should these
butterflies take our songs as
well?, You told us, each bird
have a song on its own. They
already have all the colors of
the rainbow”
“You are right, I made a
song for each one of you
and that will be yours alone.”
From then on until this day,
butterflies have remained
beautiful and silent.
