Where to Go for Help??
• See the syllabus & References which covers this!
– See Me!!!
• During Class Time; Before beginning the Lecture or after
the lecture finished or my office.
• Or call me on the phone.
• Or email me! I respond to email!!!

14
Where to Go for Help??
– Your Fellow Students!!!
• A very effective strategy can be to work on homework &
to study for quizzes & exams together in a group.
• This is how professionals work in the “real world”.
– The Internet!!!
• There are HUGE numbers of EMD Help Web sites!
Using Google.com & typing in “EMD Help” gives more
hits!!!! I encourage you to try out some.

15
To Succeed in this Course

• READ the book, which cost you many $$$!

– It’s most effective to read the material BEFORE I
lecture over it.
• WORK the assigned homework problems!!
– Before looking at the solutions. Copying the solutions
will NOT teach you Electrical Machine and Drives.
• WORK extra problems!

16
To Succeed in this Course

COME TO CLASS!!

• There is a correlation between attendance & grade! Also, skipping

means that you are WASTING the tuition & fees that you (or
your parents) paid!

ATTENDANCE!!!

LECTURE ATTENDANCE WILL BE TAKEN & IT IS

COMPULSORY, MAKE SURE YOU ATTEND > 80%

17
BUT, PLEASE…

 Study Smart not HARD!

 Pay attention in class!

 Please ask if you have any

questions !

 Refresh what you have learned

in class at home!

 remember and familiarize with

all the formulas.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION to EMD

MENJANA MINDA KREATIF DAN INOVATIF

Introduction
 An electrical machine is a device which converts
mechanical energy into electrical energy or vice
versa. Electrical machines also include
transformers, which do not actually make
conversion between mechanical and electrical form
but they convert AC current from one voltage level
to another voltage level.

20
Cont..
An electric generator is an electrical machine which
converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. A
generator works on the principle of electromagnetic
induction. It states that whenever a conductor moves
in a magnetic field, an emf gets induced within the
conductor. This phenomenon is called as generator
action.

AC Generator (converts mechanical energy into

Alternating Current (AC) electricity)

DC Generator (converts mechanical energy into

Direct Current (DC) electricity).
21
Cont..

Electric Motor is a part of an electrical machine

which converts electrical energy into mechanical
energy. When a current carrying conductor is
placed in a magnetic field, the conductor
experiences a mechanical force and this is the
principle behind motoring action.

22
Electrical Machines Classification
An electrical machine is a device that can
convert either mechanical energy to
electrical energy OR electrical energy to
mechanical energy.

23
Why electric motors and generators so
common?
• Electric power is a efficient energy source that
is easy to transmit over a long distances &
easy to control.

• Electric motor does not require fuel the way

that an internal-combustion engines does.
Suited environments.

• The energy can be transmitted over long

distances to the place where it is to be used,
and it can be used cleanly in any home,
office, or factory.
24
25
Basic Principles of Magnetic
Fields Application

• Magnetic fields are the fundamental mechanism by

which energy is converted from one form to another
in motors, generators and transformers.

• A magnetic field is the magnetic effect of electric

currents and magnetic materials.

26
Cont..
• Four basic principles how magnetic fields are
used in these devices:

1. A current-carrying wire produces a magnetic field in the area

around it.

2. A time-changing magnetic field induces a voltage in a coil of wire if

it passes through that coil (This is the basis of transformer action.)

3. A current-carrying wire in the presence of a magnetic field has a

force induced on it. (This is the basis of motor action.)

4. A moving wire in the presence of a magnetic field has a voltage

induced in it. (This is the basis of generator action.)

27
 A current-carrying wire produces a magnetic
field in the area around it.

Ampere’s Law , 28
 A time-changing magnetic field induces a voltage in a coil of
wire if it passes through that coil (This is the basis of
transformer action.)
• When a magnet is moved into a coil of wire, changing the
magnetic field and magnetic flux through the coil, a voltage
will be generated in the coil according to Faraday's Law.

• The change could be produced by changing the magnetic field

strength, moving a magnet toward or away from the coil,
moving the coil into or out of the magnetic field, rotating the
coil relative to the magnet.

29
 A current-carrying wire in the presence of a magnetic field
has a force induced on it.

• Right hand rule

• Newton (Force)

 A moving wire in the presence of a magnetic field
has a voltage induced in it
