Aim:

“ I don’t think that architecture is only about shelter, is only about a very simple enclosure. It
should be able to excite you, to calm you, to make you think.” –Zaha Hadid

To comfort the users of airport and to solve all basic problems faced inside a
space by exploring Biomimicry Architecture in the felid of Airport Design.
t
Objective:
•To design a terminal which is both functionally efficient and also iconic enough.
•Create an atmosphere for the people who use the terminal, a place for delight, not just a
building for arrivaland departure.
•It will also look at issues involved in airport planning and also at modern technologies being
implemented for safer, quicker and and an enriched air transport building.
•It also aims at innovations in airport design by removing the redundant functions which are
present currently and replacing them with modern technologies to increase the service level
of the new terminal to a much higher category.
t
•Segregation of terminal building along with parking facilities and public transportation.
Scope of Work:

•To study the various airports, focus will be on Passenger terminal only and approach
from the parking area and how efficient in terms of designing and interconnectivity
using basic planning parameters for the development of Terminal building.
•After various study and existing site, focus will be on conceptual zoning/ master plan
of the airport complex indicating the area for terminal building.
•Proceeding on to the detailed architectural design for proposal integrated terminal
looking into 5 important parameters: Passenger movement, Baggage handling, Transit
t
passenger Movement, Technological advancement, and Energy Efficiency.
•To study the various roof forms of world famous International Airports roof and try to
connect it with biomimicry architecture.
Project Brief:
Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR)
•MMR Area – 4355 Sq. Km
• Population - 22 Million (2011 census)
• MMR Projected Aviation demand 100 MPPA
• Mumbai Airport to cater to 45 MPPA ( million passengers per annum) and Navi Mumbai
Airport to handle atleast 60 MPPA.
The need for second airport in Navi Mumbai:
Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR)
• Mumbai airport handled 36.6 million passengers in FY 15 – a growth rate of 13.7% as
compared to FY14. (Growth in passenger traffic for the period April to October of FY 16
from the same period in FY 15 is 14.8%)
• Mumbai airport estimated to handle peak traffic of about 45 mppa*
t
• Passenger traffic for Mumbai Metropolitan Region expected to cross 45 mppa in FY 2018
as per traffic forecast (Compounded Annual Growth Rate of 7.6% for the period FY 15 – FY
18)
The need for second airport in Navi Mumbai:
NAVI MUMBAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (NMIA)

•The proposed second airport for MMR is located at Navi Mumbai for several reasons.
Prominent among them is the fact that Navi Mumbai is expected to cater for the future
growth in population, business and commercial activities of MMR. The availability of
excellent physical and social infrastructure coupled with an environment-friendly site with
least resettlement and rehabilitation makes the Navi Mumbai Airport project both
t
technically feasible and financially viable.
•NMIA is one of the world's largest ''greenfield''state-of-the-art international airports,
currently proposed for development, offering world-class facilities for passengers, cargo,
aircrafts and airlines.
Site Description:
The proposed Airport is situated in the geographical centre of Navi Mumbai, at
latitude 180 59' 40" N and longitude 730 04' 13" E on the National Highway No.
4B near Panvel at a distance of approx. 35 km from the existing Chhatrapati
Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) in Mumbai.

The National Highway 4B provides the main road access to the Airport from the east,
t
whereas the Aamra Marg provides road access to the Airport from the west. The
Airport is also accessible from the existing Mankhurd-Belapur-Panvel commuter rail
corridor from Khandeshwar Railway Station and from the Targhar Railway Station on
the Nerul - Uran Railway line presently under development.
