A Manicurist should have the

following qualifications:
Knowledge of the structure of the hands , arms and
nails.
Knowledge of composition of various cosmetics used
in manicuring.
Ability to give a good manicure in a systematic and
efficient manner.
Ability to care for the patron’s manicuring
problems.
Ability to recognize nail disorders which may be
treated , and diseases that should be referred to a
physician.
Ability to please and satisfy patrons.
Tools / Implement
1. Nail Clippers /
Scissors
This is used to trim
long nails to an
even length and
shape.
2. Nail Cutter
It is a tool made
of metal used to
trim finger nails
and toenails.
3. Nail file / Emery board
This gives nails a proper
shape. It is not very good
option to use a metal
nail filer as it does not
even out the corners of
our nails. You may find
an emery board which
has a coarse and fine
side.
4. Nail Buffer
It polishes the
surface of the nails
giving it a
consistent and shiny
look.

5. Cuticle pusher
It is used for loosening
and pushing back the
cuticles and is usually
metal with one of the
tips resembling that of
a flat head screw
driver.
6. Cuticle nipper
This is used to trim the
hangnails and dead
skin. Use this with
caution otherwise you
may end up hurting
your fingers.
7. Nail brush
This is used after
the cuticle tools to
clean your nail
surface and under
in warm soapy
water and get rid
of nail dirt.
8. Pumice stone / foot file
This is exclusively used for
pedicure to smoothen out
rough heels.
9. Orangewood stick
This is multi functional.
It can be used to
pushback cuticles or
clean dirt under your
nails or even correct nail
paint errors.
10. Toe separators
They are places between the toes
before putting on nail polish so
that they do not smudge.

11. Tweezers
To gently lift small bits of
cuticle.
12. Mixing bowl
It is a small open-top , rounded cup- like container
used for mixing the aromatic oils and other fluids
for the hand or foot spa.
Cosmetics
1. Nail polish Removers
Contain organic solvents
and are used to dissolve
the old polish present on
the nails.

2. Cuticle oil
Softens and lubricates the
skin around the nails.
3. Cuticle creams
Are mixtures of fats
and waxes which are
intended to prevent or
correct brittle nails
and dry cuticle.
4. Cuticle removers or
solvents may contain 2-
5% of sodium or
potassium hydroxide
plus glycerine. After the
cuticle is softened with
this liquid , it can be
easily removed.
5. Nail Bleaches contain
hydrogen peroxide or diluted
organic acids in a liquid form or
mixed with other ingredients to
form a white paste. When
applied over nails, under the
free-edge and on fingertips ,
stains are removed.
6. Nail whiteners are
applied as a paste ,
cream or coated string.
When applied under the
free-edge of the nail ,
they keep the tips
looking white.
7. Liquid nail polish or
lacquer is used to color
or gloss the nail.

8. Nail polish solvent


containing acetone or
other solvent is used to
thin out the nail polish
when it has thickened.
9. Base coat is a
liquid product
applied before the
liquid nail polish.

10. Top coat or Sealer is


a liquid applied over the
nail polish. This product
protects the polish and
minimizes chipping or
cracking of the colored
polish.
11. Nail strengtheners are
products designed to prevent
the nails from splitting or
peeling. These are applied to
the tips of the nails only.

12. Nail Drier is a fine


spray which protects the
nail polish against
stickiness and dulling and
can be used either as a
spray over the top coat or
directly on the nail polish.
13. Hand creams and lotions keep the skin soft by
replacing the natural oils lost from the skin.

1. Manicuring table is an
equipment designed
with glass intended for
performing manicure.

2. Manicuring stool is
an adjustable
upholstered seat fitted
over metal or chrome
3. Ottoman is a kind of
foot stool designed to
provide comfort and
elevation during
pedicure

4. Finger bowl used


for holding warm
soapy water.
5. Disinfectant container
is a receptacle large
enough to hold the
disinfectant solution in
which objects to be
sanitized is immersed.
6. Manicure pillow is a
cloth cases stuffed with
something soft , such as
down , feathers or foam
rubber that helps a client
to keep her hands stady
and relaxed.
7. Manicure tray is a flat
container where all the
tools and implements
are placed for use by the
manicurist.

8. Foot spa basin is a large


rectangular container used
for bathing and soaking the
feet when giving a
pedicure.
9. Trolley is a wheeled
cart that is pushed by
hand and used for
transporting manicuring
and pedicuring tools and
materials.

10. Foot spa machine is an


electronic machine used for
soaking , bathing and
massaging the feet during a
foot spa.
11. Hands spa machine
is an electronic
machine used to
relieve pain of arthritis
, muscle spasms and
dry cracked skin of the
hands.
12. Foot spa stool / chair
is a simple seat with
three or four legs
designed to provide
comfort and elevation
during a foot spa.
13. Manicurist’s chair or stool is the adjustable
upholstered seat fitted over a metal or chrome.
