Regulated Voltage Control
- Introduction

RVC is:
Intelligent Dynamic Control of the
Vehicle System Voltage.
Regulated Voltage Control
- SARVC Benefits

• Improved Fuel Economy

• Improved Battery Life

• Improved Lamp Life

• Improved Switch Life

Regulated Voltage Control
- Traditional Charging System

Voltage setpoint is an
open loop function of
generator temperature
L_Term (ON/OFF)
V_Out F_Term PCM

Gen IA Temp

Tends to overcharge battery on long trips at highway

speeds.
- Generator runs “cool” (wind chill effect), raising voltage

Tends to undercharge battery on short trips at low speeds

and cooler temperatures.
- Generator runs “hot” (under-hood heat trapped), reducing
voltage

Regulated Voltage Control
- Three Basic Modes of Operation

• Charge Mode
– Responsible for Charging the Battery at Optimal Set Point
• Fuel Economy Mode
– Lowers the voltage until 0 amps in or out of battery. Resulting
lower voltage results in Fuel Economy
• Voltage Reduction Mode
– When conditions for F.E. Mode not met, V.R. Mode can still lower
the system voltage to 12.9V @ Battery when the battery is no
longer taking appreciable current.

- Voltage Boost Hooks

For the following active systems RVC will boost voltage to

maintain performance requirements

• Head lamp or High beam ON (CII signal from BCM)

• Wiper ON (BCM)
• Rear Defog ON (BCM)
• Electric Engine Cooling Fan HIGH SPEED (PCM)
• High Fuel Demand (PCM)
• Low Ambient (De-Ice) (BCM)

- RVC Generator Current Supply Profile

RVC Generator Current Capacity drops slightly at

higher RPMs (~7amps).
However, when Voltage is lowered, so is the overall
demand for current by the vehicle loads. (V=I*R,
where R is ~constant)
