IN LITERATURE
Francisco "Franz" Arcellana (September 6, 1916 –
August 1, 2002)
 A Filipino writer, poet, essayist, critic, journalist and
teacher. He is considered an important progenitor of
the modern Filipino short story in English. Arcellana
pioneered the development of the short story as a
lyrical prose-poetic form within Filipino literature.
 Arcellana's published books include:

 Selected Stories (1962), Poetry and Politics: The State


of Original Writing in English in the Philippines Today
(1977), The Francisco Arcellana Sampler (1990).
Edith L. Tiempo ( April 22, 1919-: August 21, 2011)
 She is poet, fictionist, teacher and literary critic is one of
the finest Filipino writers in English whose works are
characterized by a remarkable fusion of style and
substance, of craftsmanship and insight. Her poems are
intricate verbal transfigurations of significant experiences
as revealed, in two of her much anthologized pieces,
"Halaman" and "Bonsai

Bienvenido Lumbera (April 11, 1932-present)
 He is a Filipino poet, critic and dramatist. He is a National
Artist of the Philippines and a recipient of the Ramon
Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative
Communications..He has a poetry collection entitled
Likhang Dila, Likhang Diwa (1993), and Balaybay: Mga
Tulang Lunot at Manibalang, a collection of new poems in
Filipino and those from Likhang Dila. He has several
critical works, including Abot-Tanaw: Sulyap at Suri sa
Nagbabagong Kultura at Lipunan (1987) and Writing the
Nation/Pag-akda ng Bansa (2000). He has also done several
librettos, among them Tales of the Manuvu (1977) and
Rama Hari (1980). Sa Sariling Bayan: Apat na Dulang May
Musika (DLSU, 2003) collects the four historical musicals
Nasa Puso ang Amerika, Bayani, Noli Me Tangere: The
Musical, and Hibik at Himagsik Nina Victoria Laktaw.
Nestor Vicente Madali Gonzalez ( September 8,
1915- November 28, 1999)
 He was a Filipino novelist, short story writer, essayist
and poet. Conferred as the National Artist of the
Philippines for Literature in 1997.As a National
Artist, Gonzalez was honored with a state funeral at
the Libingan ng mga Bayani .The works of Gonzalez
have been published inFilipino , English , Chinese,
German , Russian and Indonesian.

Virgilio Senadrin Almario( March 9, 1944-present)
 He is better known by his pen name Rio Alma , is
aFilipino artist, poet, critic, translator, editor,
teacher, and cultural manager. He is a National
Artist of the Philippines and currently serves as the
chairman of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF),
the government agency mandated to promote and
standardize the use of the Filipino language.

Cirilo Bautista (July 9, 1941 - May 6, 2018)
 He was a Filipino poet, critic and writer of nonfiction. He was
conferred with the National Artist of the Philippines award in
2014.Bautista taught creative writing and literature at St. Louis
University (1963–1968) and the University of Santo Tomas
(1969–1970) before moving to De La Salle University-Manila in
1970. He is also a co-founding member of the Philippine Literary
Arts Council (PLAC) and a member of the Manila Critics Circle,
Philippine Center of International PEN and the Philippine
Writers Academy.
 Bautista works include Boneyard Breaking ,Sugat ng Salita, The
Archipelago , Telex Moon ,Summer Suns , Charts , The Cave and
Other Poems, Kirot ng Kataga , and Bullets and Roses: The
Poetry of Amado V. Hernandez . His novel Galaw ng Asoge was
published by the University of Santo Tomas Press in 2004. His
latest book, Believe and Betray: New and Collected Poems,
appeared in 2006, published by De La Salle University Press
Nicomedes "Nick" Márquez Joaquín (May 4, 1917 –
April 29, 2004)
 A Filipino writer and journalist best known for his short
stories and novels in the English language. He also wrote
using the pen name Quijano de Manila. Joaquín was
conferred the rank and title of National Artist of the
Philippines for Literature. He has been considered one of
the most important Filipino writers, along with José Rizal
and Claro M. Recto. Unlike Rizal and Recto, whose works
were written in Spanish, Joaquin's major works were
written in English despite being a native Spanish speaker.

the Dying Wanton”, “The Legend of the Virgin Jewel;”, “It
Was Later than we Thought”.
Amado Vera Hernandez(September 13, 1903 –
March 24, 1970)
 A Filipino writer and labor leader who was
known for his criticism of social injustices in the
Philippines and was later imprisoned for his
involvement in the communist movement. He
was the central figure in a landmark legal case
that took 13 years to settle.

Lázaro Francisco y Angeles(February 22, 1898 –
June 17, 1980)
 A Filipino novelist, essayist and playwright. Francisco
is the recipient of the National Artist of the
Philippines for Literature, posthumously, in 2009.

Jose Garcia Villa (August 5, 1908 – February 7,
1997)
 A Filipino poet, literary critic, short story writer, and
painter. He was awarded the National Artist of the
Philippines title for literature in 1973, as well as the
Guggenheim Fellowship in creative writing by
Conrad Aiken. He is known to have introduced the
"reversed consonance rhyme scheme" in writing
poetry, as well as the extensive use of punctuation
marks—especially commas, which made him known
as the Comma Poet. He used the penname Doveglion
(derived from "Dove, Eagle, Lion"), based on the
characters he derived from himself.

Francisco Sionil José (born 3 December 1924)
 One of the most widely read Filipino writers in
the English language. His novels and short
stories depict the social underpinnings of class
struggles and colonialism in Filipino society.
 A five-novel series that spans three centuries of
Philippine history, translated into 22 languages

Carlos Peña Rómulo (14 January 1898 – 15
December 1985)
 A Filipino diplomat, statesman, soldier,
journalist and author. He was a reporter at 16, a
newspaper editor by the age of 20, and a
publisher at 32. He was a co-founder of the Boy
Scouts of the Philippines, a general in the US
Army and the Philippine Army, university
president, President of the UN General
Assembly, was eventually named one of the
Philippines' National Artists in Literature, and
was the recipient of many other honors and
honorary degrees.

Alejandro Reyes Roces (13 July 1924 – 23
May 2011)
 A Filipino author, essayist, dramatist and a
National Artist of the Philippines for literature.
He served as Secretary of Education from 1961 to
1965, during the term of Philippine President
Diosdado Macapagal. Known for Changing the
date of Philippine Independence Day from July 4
to June 12, Recovering the stolen original
manuscripts of Noli Me Tangere, El
Filibusterismo and Mi último Adiós, Changed the
language used in Philippine passports, coins, bills
and diplomas to Wikang Pambansa.
Carlos Quirino ( January 14, 1910-May 20,
1999)
 A nephew of Philippine president Elpidio
Quirino.He is a famous filipino. He is best known
for his early biography of Jose Rizal. He also
wrote several works the Philippine history and
biographies of President Manuel Quezon and the
painter Damian Domingo. In 1997 he was
recognised as a National Artist of the Philippines
for Historical Literature.
