What is OUTDOOR?
• space outside an enclosed area
including the natural environment.

What is OUTDOOR ACTIVITY?


• leisure pursuits engaged in the outdoors,
often in natural or semi-natural settings.
WHAT IS RECREATION?

• It is derived from the Latin word recreare


which means to be refreshed.
• Recreation consists of things that you do in
your spare time to relax.
• activity done for enjoyment when one is not
working.
Why do people engage in outdoor
recreational activity?
• Personal satisfaction and enjoyment
• Be in touch with nature
• Personal pursuit such as photography,
collecting sea shells, reaching the top of
mountain
• Attaining certain fitness level

voluntarily, and of their own
choice.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF OUTDOOR
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY?
PHYSICAL
- Prevent a person from having sedentary life.
- Allows people to move, by walking, running,
swimming, biking, paddling, etc.
- It gets their hearts pumping and their bigger muscles
at work.
- Promote cardiovascular and muscular fitness, and
improve the function of the immune system.
PHSYCHO-EMOTIONAL
- Help people to rest, relax, unwind or de-stress
and feel revitalized.
- Prevent some cases of depression and anxiety.
- Improve self-esteem, confidence and
creativity.
- Allows individual to discover his inner spirit
and sense of self, creating new behavior and
identity.
SOCIAL
 Ways for family bonding
 Allows one to meet and interact with others.
 Promotes stewardship
 People learns how to connect with the
environment.
 People realize the great things that nature
provides mankind.
ECONOMIC

People become productive at work


Created jobs and other economic
activities which have one way or
another , contributed to our economic
growth.
SPIRITUAL

 Positive outdoor experiences can stir up


spiritual values.
 Bring certain calmness within the person
 It strengthen the individual as it heals,
rejuvenates, and sooths the body and soul.
What are the important things that should be
remembered when participating in an
OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY?
The Leave NO Trace Seven Principles
Principle 1: Plan Ahead and Prepare
 Check if your planned activity is permitted. Know the
rules, guidelines and safety procedures they have set.
 Prepare needed equipment
 Plan how to cope case emergency arises
 Check weather forecast
 Avoid crowded areas
 Repack food to minimize waste
 Used maps and compass to avoid markings
Principle 2: Travel and Camp on Durable Surface
 Walk, run, bike, or camp on durable surfaces like
established tracks, rocks, gravel and sand.
 Avoid walking on soft surfaces like soft plants.
 Use existing trails or campsites
 Walk in a single file to avoid erosion
 Keep the campsite small and discreet
 Camp at least 200 feet from lakes and rivers to protect
the waters.
Principle 3: Dispose of waste properly
Pack it in, pack it out
When camping cat holes are dug (6 to 8
Inches deep) for human waste
Dishes should be washed 200 feet away
from the lakes.
Principle 4: Leave what you find
• Do not touch heritage artifacts nor leave
marks on them
• Do not take any plant, rock, or marine
animals with you.
• Do not build structures, furniture
Principle 5: minimize Campfire Impact
• Use lightweight stove for cooking
• Keep fire small use only sticks
• No burning of plastics or other substance
• Burn all wood to ash.
Principle 5: Respect wildlife
• Observe wild animals from distance
• Do not feed wild animals as it not their
natural food
• Protect wildlife and protect your food
Principle 7: Considerate of other Visitors
• Respect people who live and work in the
countryside.
• Respect other visitors
• Allow the sound of nature to prevail
• Be courteous
• Camp away from trails and other visitors.
Activity 2: Determining an Outdoor Recreational
Activity

Football and soccer are activities done


outdoors and on grass. Are they outdoor
recreational activities? Why or why not? Defend
your answer.
Activity 3: Choosing an Outdoor Recreational
Activity
1. Given a chance, what outdoor would you like to try?
Why? Where? Who do you like to be with?
2. Research, surf the internet, and read a blogs. Print a
picture or cut out a picture and write something about
it.
Activity 4: Left a Trace
From your observation, whether first hand or
from other sources ( news, documentary
shows, narrated by friends, etc.), which
among the Leave No Trace Seven Principles is
usually not being observed in the Philippines?
Explain your answer. You may cut and post a
news article or personal picture to back up
your answer.
