21.1 Should and ought to
We use should and ought to to give advice and to say
what is the right or best thing to do.
You are an excellent swimmer. You should/ought
to join the school team.

P.213
2
Unit 21 Advice, suggestions & offers

1 Should and ought to are not as strong as must.

We can use should and ought to to talk about
obligation or duty, or to give advice.
Should and ought to are very similar in meaning.
Passengers should/ought to check in two
hours before departure time.
Compare: Passengers must go through
immigration and customs
before they can board their
plane.

Unit 21 Advice, suggestions & offers

2 We use should when something is not right or not

what we expect.

night to find Tom was still studying.
‘It’s late,’ she told him. ‘You should
be in bed by now.’

that the right thing to do was not done.

shouldn’t/oughtn’t to be watching TV
now.
You’re late. You should/ought to have

Unit 21 Advice, suggestions & offers
21.2 Had better + bare infinitive
Had better is a past form, but it refers to the immediate
future. We use this structure to say what the best thing to
do in a particular situation is, to give strong advice or to
tell someone what to do.
You look tired. You’d better/had better go to bed.
The negative is had better not.
The weather is bad. We’d better/had better not
go out today.

Had better is NOT used to compare situations/advice/

actions; it is simply suggesting one thing.

commonly left out.
