PRINTMAKING PROCESS IN THE

PHILIPPINES
OBJECTIVES
• Understand the role of Printmaking in the
Phillipine history and culture.
• Know and differentiate the printmaking
techniques.
• Make simple print from available media.
• Use printmaking in creating new design and
products.
Relief printing
• Is created by printing the surface of an object
by inking the surface and impressing it on
paper or cloth, or by rubbing the paper over
textured objects by using crayons or pastel.
Linoleum or rubbercut
• Print is produced by carving out certain areas
of a drawing in a linoleum or rubber sheet,
inking the uncarved areas with a roller or
cotton stamp and pressing paper or cloth on
top of the sheet to get the print of the
embossed or raised area.
Woodblock printing
• Is a process of creating an image that uses
wooden block where the lines and textures
are carved out of wood.
Intaglio

• Refers to printmaking process in which ink is


transferred from the groves of the metal plate
to paper by extreme pressure.
Ground
• Refers to a wax coating that resist acid in
metal engraving particularly in etching.
Lithography
• Is a printmaking technique based on the
principle that water and oil do not mix.
Stencil
• Is a method of printing that involves stamping
ink through the cutout part of a master paper
to make printed copies.
Printmaking History
The beginning of Prinmaking started 2000BCE.
Tomas Pinpin was the first Filipino printer, his
first occupation is placing and arranging the
wooden block tiles for printing in a frame that is
why he is called Tomas na “taga pin-pin” in
tagalog or in short Tomas Pinpin. Another
Filipino Printmaker is Nicolas Cruz Bagay, who
was an engraver and a magnificent artist for his
drawings which he engraves.
other notable printmakers of our country
is Manuel Rodriguez Sr., who was considered to
be the father of Printmaking in the Philippines,
for he taught printmaking even at home and
encourage many of the printmakers to pursue
their meduim.

Coins can be simple but it can be a source


of inspiration to make prints that can used in
making products and designs.

– Your leaf printing can be used in t-shirt printing or
in making or in making wallpapers, book covers,
paper bags, and other useful designs.
Printmaking
– Is an art of transferring printed images from a
surface. A print is a hand produced picture that
has been transferred from a printing surface to a
paper.
There are three broad categories of printmaking
according to surface type:
1. Relief Printing
2. Intaglio
3. Planographic process
Relief Printing
– Uses woodcut, rubber stamps, and linoleum cut.
– Woodcut printing is the earliest form of relief
printing. In this type of printing, the image is
directly drawn to the wood surface then the artist
removes the background around the image or the
non-image areas known as negatives.
– Wood engraving techniques, it uses endgrain on
blocks of the hardwood
Intaglio
Intaglio printing, what is remove in the plate
ends up to be printed. The most difficult intaglio
process is line engraving.
