The Feasibility Study of the

Admixture of Chanos chanos

(Milkfish) and Oreochronis
niloticus (Tilapia) Scales as
Bioplastics
Researchers: Agacoscos, Rachel

Paz, Maricar P.
Ralleca, Glenda
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Feasibility study - the study is an analysis of
how possible or successfully we could
complete something.
Admixture - the act of mixing ingredients to
another.
Bioplastics - are plastics made from renewable
sources of biomass, such as vegetable fats and
oils, maize starch, straw, woodchips, sawdust,
recycled food waste, etc.
INTRODUCTION
Biopolymer/ bioplastic as
substitute to commercial
Fish Scales as Fishery
Wastes
 Chitin and Chitosan
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The findings of this study will benefit the
government agencies that focus in the environment,
community, government, and the people in general
ENVIRONMENT
This study will most likely benefit the environment
because the use of bioplastics contributes towards
improving the environment. The bioplastics are
biodegradable and it is renewable which allows the
reduction of amount of waste in the environment.
COMMUNITY
This study will help the community to promote a
clean and green surroundings and it will also help
reduce the waste that we encounter everyday within the
community.
GOVERNMENT
The government will benefit in this
study because they can use this product as
a substitute to usual plastic to help reduce
the problem with plastics wastes and to
help them promote a safer environment.
PEOPLE
This study will benefit the people because
bioplastics are environmental friendly and
non toxic so it will be safer to use than the
usual plastic.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This research aims to answer these following
questions:
1. How long is the decomposition of the
bioplastic?
2. What are the properties of Milkfish scale and
Tilapia scale that makes it a potential for
bioplastic?
3. How can Milkfish and Tilapia Scales as
Bioplastics be beneficial to humans?
RESEARCH DESIGN
This research will be integrated through
experimental and observation method.

METHODOLOGY
Fish scales from Milkfish and Tilapia was
collected from the wet markets in Caloocan and
Valenzuela City. The scales will be cleaned and
dried under the sun for three days. Use a grinder
to reduce the size of fish scales.
Extraction of Chitosan in Fish scales
These will be placed in 1000ml beaker and soaked in
a boiling sodium hydroxide (NaOH) 2 and 4% w/v for one
hour to dissolve the proteins and sugar thus isolating the
crude chitin. After the samples were boiled in the sodium
hydroxide, the beakers containing the fish scales
samples were allowed to cool for 30 minutes at room
temperature.
The dried fish scales will demineralize using 1%
hydrochloric acid (HCl) four times its quantity. The
samples were allowed to soak for 24 hours to remove the
minerals (mainly calcium carbonate).
Each of the setups were added to 60
ml distilled water. The mixtures were
stirred until it forms like a gel type. Put
the mixtures in separated wax paper
and spread uniformly. Each mixture will
take 3-4 days to dry out and the cast
was removed.

LIMITATION
The study focused on producing
bioplastics from the fish scales of milkfish
and tilapia. It also aimed to collect
information about its properties,
effectivity, and rate of decomposition.
