But the only ship that returned to

Spain was Victoria because the rest was
sunk.
The First Globe Circumnavigation

- Magellan’s goal in his voyage in 1519 was

to find a route to Asia sailing west to reach
the spice islands of Indonesia in search of
spices such as cloves and nutmeg.
- Magellan’s expedition also sought to travel
around the world.
- On August 10, 1519 , five (5) ships
departed from Seville, between 1519 – 1522
, it became the first circumnavigation of the
globe.
Discoveries during the Expedition

 They met local people, who looked liked

Giants, they are called Patagonian Giants.

 They proceeded until the discovery of the

strait, named after Magellan himself, it is
called the Straight of Magellan on October
21st 1520.
 They arrived a large ocean and it is named the Pacific
by Magellan. He called this body of water Pacific due
to the calmness of the water during that time.
(“Pacific” means peaceful)

 They arrived in the Philippines in March 16,1521

which was first discovered by Ferdinand Magellan.

 Ferdinand Magellan also proved that the world was

round .

Enemy of Lapu-Lapu) let himself be
converted to Christian by his own will
(without being forced).

in a posion arrow.
CHALLENGES

The Challenges they faced during the voyage was:

• Starvation

• Bad Weather

• Diseases

and Death was the their most problem because Magellan

and most of his crew died during the battle in Mactan.
SURVIVORS

 There were only 18 survivors left but still

they made the first voyage around the
world. One the survivors was a sailor and
scholar named Antonio Pigafetta.
 He wrote detailed journals throughout
the voyage recording all that happened.
Much of that we know about Magellan’s
travel came from his journal.
Significance of the Expedition

 The main significance of his voyage was

that he showed that it was possible to sail
around the world, and left a record of to
do it.
 Magellan’s voyage vastly increased the
geographical knowledge of mankind and
proved once and for all that the earth is
round.
 From the point of view of the Filipinos,
Magellan’s expedition was significant
because it paved the way for contacts
between the Philippines and western
civilization.
 Finally, the voyage paved the way to
Spanish colonization and Christianization
of the Philippines. The later voyages of
Fernando de Villalobos and Miguel Lopez
de Legaspi, to a certain extent, owed their
success to Magellan’s epochal voyage to
the Far East.
