Objectives

Our objective was to replicate views of the

components of a scissor jack and to make
its 3D model in AutoCAD.

Scissor Jack
Jack is a mechanical device which is used
for lifting heavy loads. A mechanical jack
employs a square thread for lifting heavy
equipment.

Components
Scope

A detailed study on this scissor jack.

 Designing a 3d model in AutoCAD with
known dimensions.
 Explain how these dimensions make the
jack a safe and reliable design for lifting
and lowering heavy loads.
Assumptions

 Weight of car = 3300 lb (almost =1.5 tons)

 Weight on front axle = 60% of 3300 lb
 Weight on front tyre = 1980lb = 450kg
 Weight on rear axle = 40% of 3300 lb
 1980 lb force acts on the front axle which
is considered for designing the jack.
Design
Power Screw

 Material: ASTM A36 Mild Steel

 Friction coefficient = 0.20
 Double Start Square Thread
Design Calculations

 Length of arm=L1=L2=L3=L4=160mm
 Length of Power Screw = 350mm
 W2 = 50mm
 Maximum lift = h1+h2 = 300mm
  is the angle that the link makes with the
horizontal when jack is at its lowest
position.
Θ = 20.36°
Design Calculation

 Tension, T = W / 2 * tanθ
 Total Tension = 2*T = W / tanθ
 For the power screw under tension, we
can take t = 124 N/mm2 for mild steel
 Load = (π/4)* dc2 * t
 2*T = W/tan () = (π/4)* dc2 * t
 Core Diameter = 11.34 mm
Self-Locking

 Helix angle;  = 4.85˚

 Coefficient of Friction:
μ = tan () = 0.20
friction angle;  = 11.3˚
 >  hence the screw is self-locking
Stress Analysis
 Stress contour of the jack at 5886N load.
Outcome

 2D views and 3D model of scissor jack in

AutoCAD.
 Share the design features of jack with the
class.
 Introduce the students wit terminologies
related to a mechanical jack.
