WHAT IS ATREND?

A pattern of gradual change in

a condition, output, or process,
or an average or general
tendency of a series of data
points to move in a certain
direction over time,
represented by a line or curve
on a graph.
WHAT IS TREND?

A general direction of change : a way

of behaving, proceeding, etc. that is
developing and becoming more
common.

-something that is currently popular

or fashionable
-Trendsshape the tomorrows right before us. It is
also products of humanity’s creative thinking.

-It is a sequential pattern of change in recorded

data- a change evidenced by a rise or fall of
variables when measured between at least two
points over time (Gordon, 2008)
-Trend is a pattern of change.

- Must pass basic tests of significance; a

change that affects a wide range of people
and that has broad social, economic,
cultural, spiritual and political implications.
EXAMPLES OF TRENDS:
Facebook – is the most common
social network website where you can
share information about yourself and
communicate with other people.
Twitter – it lets you see what is
happening around the world,
from breaking news and
entertainment, sports and
politics to big events and every
day interests.
Trend is significant, have broad
implications in all aspects of society,
identifiable and explainable while
fad is transitory or quick, affect
only particular group of people
without impact and driven by
emotions.
TRENDS AND ITS TYPES AND CHARACTERISTICS
TREND VS. FAD

FAD- Something that quickly gains in popularity

and may fade just s quickly, sometimes just not
quick enough.

- They are fleeting and often last a season but

may carry over a couple of years.

- Often heavily driven by social media today.

Examples: Clothing, food, exercises, hairstyle, language.
TREND

-are a bit slower paced but represent something

that is occurring on a much wider scale than a
fad.
TYPES OF TREND
MEGATRENDS
MEGA TREND

If trends are a bit slower, megatrends are the glaciers

of this set. Megatrends are the long-lasting, years in
developing, things that shift the world.

-These are forces that, barring disaster, we will all

have to deal with.

“Megatrends are the probable future – or express what we

know with great confidence about the future. Megatrends are
certainties.” - Copenhagen Institute for Future
Studies
-events that occur over a longer period of time and of
which we can be sure about, influencing all the aspects
of life.

- These events mostly occur as a reaction to the behavior

and activities done by people in the last century but also
more recently
EXAMPLES:

aging population,
globalization,
increasing technological change,
urbanization,
prosperity,
increased network speed,
and just the speed of everyday life.
demographic changes,
urbanization,
climate change,
advance in technology

This kind of tendencies cannot be stopped or

influenced easily, but it’s possible – and advised –
to respond to them.
MEGATRENDS

-entail a major
restructuring; they are
larger pattern of broad
trends that reshape and
transform our lives.
THE ORIGINAL MEGATRENDS

-from an Industrial society to an

information society
-from forced technology to high tech/
high touch technology
-from a National Economy to a World
Economy
-from a Short Term to a Long Term
THINGS THAT COULD
DERAIL MEGATRENDS

. The earth could be hit by an asteroid;

-the unrest in the Ukraine could blossom into World

War III;

-terrorism could come to the US on a broader scale,

-a disease could develop that kills everyone over the age

of 60; or some other such happening.
MACRO TRENDS

-are the children of megatrends.

-A macro trend, like social media has

become lasts longer more in the 5 to 10 year
range.

-the use of social media is a trend that

reaches a broader segment.
-are more numerous and all of them related to
the “profession” of their parents.

-As megatrends are covering a very large area,

mega-trends tend to focus on certain parts of the
bigger picture.
Take as example climate change – it comes in a
package with melting glaciers, natural disasters,
rising level of the oceans and so on. –

the megatrend “advances in technology” which

comes with Internet of Things (IoT), Big
Data, Smart Homes, Machine Learning,
Artificial Intelligence and many more.
It has taken a bit longer to develop on that broad
basis but now has the staying power that indicates
it is a permanent alteration of the landscape

, “A macro trend is a large-scale, sustained shift…” -

Stan Mack of Demand Media says
MICRO TREND

A micro trend typically lasts 3 to 5 years.

“Micro-trends are at the core of all our trend services

and remain true to their format. They organise, support
and create transparency for the developments and
innovations of the 21st century. Those who understand
today what could be commonplace tomorrow can take
an important step towards the present and thereby pave
the way into the future.” – Nils Müller, founder &
CEO of TRENDONE
-the “nephews” of megatrends and “children” of
Macro-trends.

- They are the most active, diverse and appearing very

fast one after another.
- The list of micro-trends is the most lengthy and
diverse, and that’s because they are the “solutions”
that directly address to consumers.
- These micro-trends can also be segmented into
categories such as marketing & media innovations,
new technologies, service innovations, innovative
business models, international start-ups, and many
Example of micro trend :

Facebook when it first appeared as a social-

media platform. It was quite a niche service
used only by a group of students, which
later ended up by being a key driver to the
entire social-media movement.
There is no future in saying

“I didn’t see it coming.”
