Kalinga was the feudal republic state now known as Odisha. The king of kalinga was Raja Anantha Padmanabhan during this time. Kalinga was an independent kingdom, which had a flourishing trade. It was important becuase it controlled the land and sea routes to south India and south- east Asia. This was the reason why Ashoka fought a war to conquer kalinga. Ashoka could not neglet the importance of Kalinga for the Mauryan Empire.The vast millitary strength,wealth and power of kalinga were the main cuases of jealousy for the Magadha Empire and so, Ashoka wanted to re-establish the Magadh power in this state. In the 12th year of Ashoka’s reigh, he send a message to the ruler kalinga to surrender his empire to the Maurya’s. However, the ruler of kalinga refused to submit to the Mauryan Empire. Thus, followed a huge war between the two rulers in 261 B.C. Ashoka conquered the kingdom named kalinga. After seeing the violence and the bloodshed, Ashoka decided to give up wars.
