What is Geology?
Geology in Greek means
(geo means earth, logos means
science), it is a branch of
science dealing with the study
of earth. Also known as earth
science.
DIFFERENT BRaNCHES OF
GEOLOGY
Physical geology

Branch of geology that deals with the

various processes of physical agents such
as wind, water, glaciers and sea waves,
run on these agents go on modifying the
surface of the earth continuously.
crystallography

Deals with the study of crystals. A crystal is

a regular polyhedral form bounded by
smooth surfaces.
Mineralogy

• It is the study of minerals. It

may be defined as naturally
occurring, homogenous solid,
inorganically formed, having a
definite chemical composition
and ordered atomic
arrangement.
petrology

• It deals with the study of rocks. A rock defined as

the aggregation of minerals found in the earth’s
crust.
Structural geology

• It is the study of structures found in rocks. It is also

known as tectonic geology or simply tectonics.
stratigraphy

• A branch of geology that deals with the study of

stratified rocks and their correlation.
Historical geology

• The study of both stratigraphy and paleontology.

It is use in civil engineering to know about the
land and seas, the climate and the life of early
times upon the earth.
Mining geology

• The study of application of geology to mining

engineering.
Civil engineering
geology

• Deals with the geological problems that arise in

the field of civil engineering along with suitable
treatments.
hydrology

• The study of both quantity and quality of water

that are present in the rocks in different states.
Moreover, it includes:
• Atmospheric water
• Suface water
• Underground water
Resources
engineering

• The study of water, land, solar energy, minerals,

and etc.
Photo geology

• A branch of
geology with the
study of aerial
photographs.
