PARAGRAPH BY COMPARISON
 One way of explaining an idea or a
concept is by comparing it with
another of its kind to reveal their
similarities, or by contrasting them
to show their differences.
SIGNAL WORDS USED
 For similarities:
like, equally, also, in the same
manner, similarly, too, likewise,
both, so, as-as

o For differences
Whereas, however, in contrast, but,
instead, yet, to differentiate, less
than, on the other hand
WORDS OF THE DAY

 integrity – honor; uprightness

 newly-minted rule
newly-constructed; newly-invented

 eldership – seniority; rank

A statesman and a politician are both servants of
the country, but their similarity ends there. A
statesman is anyone who promotes the public good
with integrity and righteousness while a politician is
anybody elected to office. A statesman thinks first of
his country and the next generation, but a politician
thinks first of himself and the next election. A
statesman makes the necessary possible; a politician
makes the possible necessary. A statesman is always
guided by the Golden Rule that dictates the greatest
good for the greatest number. In contrast, the
politician is held up by a newly-minted Golden Rule,
which says that he who has the gold rules.
Statesmanship carries with it a quality of leadership
that aims to bring people together, and of eldership
that cares for others. Verily, a statesman walks his
talk; a politician talks his walk. (Adapted from Monsod)
