World Music

Music from outside North America and Europe

China

 Chinese choral music, to take the broad definition

encompassing folk singing/songs, will go back
centuries. But the modern concept of part-song starts
about the end of the Qing Dynasty when the
missionaries played a more prominent part in the
Western Music Education in China, starting with
hymns, songs and simple solfege.
 Choral pieces can be roughly categorized into:
 Contemporary compositions (eg. Those by Tan Dun)
 Folksong arrangements
 Communist choral works
 Early “western-style” choral compositions

Japan

 Geography in music
 In Hokkaido (the northern-most region of Japan)
winters are very cold and share a similar geographical
position to Russia. In these harsh oceans, fishermen
work as a team managing the heavy nets. From this
team work, folksongs developed emphasizing heavy
downbeats.
 Okinawa (the southern-most group of islands ) is very
close to the tropical belt (Tropic of Cancer) and stays
warm all year. Folksongs here use long, slow phrases
and colorful scales.
