Geography in music
In Hokkaido (the northern-most region of Japan)
winters are very cold and share a similar geographical
position to Russia. In these harsh oceans, fishermen
work as a team managing the heavy nets. From this
team work, folksongs developed emphasizing heavy
downbeats.
Okinawa (the southern-most group of islands ) is very
close to the tropical belt (Tropic of Cancer) and stays
warm all year. Folksongs here use long, slow phrases
and colorful scales.
