• Lord Joseph Lister is a famous English surgeon

born on April 5, 1827, in Upton, England. In 1861,


Lister observed that 45 to 50 percent of
amputation patients died from sepsis.
• In 1867, he developed a system of antiseptic
surgery designed to prevent microorganisms
from entering the wounds by application of
phenol on surgical dressings and at times it was
sprayed over the surgical areas.
• Using phenol as an antiseptic, he reduced the
mortality rate in his ward to 15 percent within
four years.
• He also devised a method to
destroy microorganisms in the
operation by spraying a fine
mist of carbolic acid into air,
this producing an antiseptic
environment.
• Listerine is a brand
of antiseptic mouthwash product. It is
promoted with the slogan "Kills germs that
cause bad breath". Named after Joseph
Lister as a pioneer of antiseptic surgery,
