ESBeamTool Version 1 Basics

Introduction
ESBeamTool was created to provide a quick and
easy way to do simple ray tracing by allowing the
user to specify a piece with a weld and add
wedge(s) and transducers to display a beam
path.
Getting Started
The default
workspace contains:
•Piece
•Weld
•Probe

A probe consists of a
wedge and a
transducer.
Configuring the Piece
Select the Piece Configuration
button on the Piece toolgroup to
configure the Piece and Weld.

Values can be set by moving the

slider left or right, click the left or
right value spinner or click on the
value displayed in the value
spinner and type a value.

The preview updates on the fly.

Predefined Options

Use the Weld Type pick list to

easily select a predefined weld
type.

Specify the piece velocity by

selecting from the list of available
piece materials.
Adjust the data values using the sliders, spinners
or by typing in values.

For symmetrical welds complete the values for

the left side of the weld and then check Mirror
Left.

Once a piece and weld have been configured

they can be saved for future use.
Piece and Weld Dimensions
Specify what piece and weld dimensions are
displayed in the drawing using the Piece
toolgroup:

• Piece thickness
• Offset location
• Weld angles
Configuring a Probe
Select the Probe Configuration
button on the Probe toolgroup to
configure the Probe (wedge and
transducer).

Values can be set by moving the

slider left or right, click the left or
right value spinner or click on the
value displayed in the value
spinner and type a value.

The preview updates on the fly.

Predefined Options

Specify the probe velocity by selecting from the list of

available wedge materials.
Predefined Wedges and Transducers
Use Wedge Import to
select a wedge from a list
of predefined wedges.

Use Transducer Import

to select a transducer from
a list of predefined
transducers.

Values automatically
populate the Probe
configuration.
Saving Probe Configurations
Once a wedge and transducer have been
configured they can be saved for future use.

Can be saved as:

•individual features (wedge and transducer) by

selecting Save Wedge and/or Save
Transducer buttons
•combined feature (probe) using Probe
Save button
Visibility of Probe Dimensions
Specify what dimensions and labels are
displayed in the drawing using the Probe
toolgroup:

• Wedge dimensions
• Distance of probe from weld centre
• Probe name, Wedge model and
Transducer model
Visibility and Location of Probe
Use the Probe Visibility button to specify the
visibility of the probe on the drawing.

The location of the probe from the center of the

weld and along the piece can be adjusted using
the Probe Position slider.
Adding Probes
Add additional probes using Add Probe button.
There is no limit to the number of probes that can
be added.

Use the Mirror button to flip the probe from the

left side of the weld to the right side (or vice
versa).

Use the Clone button to create a Probe using

values defined for an existing probe.
Available Beamsets
Once a probe exists one or
more of the following
beamsets can be added:
•Linear
•Sectorial
•Reference
Linear Beamsets
Linear beamsets create a
beam spread using a
combination of multiple
elements and multiple focal
laws.

•Beams can be displayed

as solid, gradient or
coverage
•Visibility of beam is
controlled by the click of a
button
•Specify the number of
beam skips to be displayed
Sectorial Beamsets
Sectorial beamsets create
a beam spread using a
single element and multiple
focal laws.

•Beams can be displayed

as solid, gradient or
coverage
•Visibility of beam is
controlled by the click of a
button
•Specify the number of
beam skips to be displayed
Reference Beamsets
Reference beamsets allow
you to add additional
annotation to your drawing.

Dimensions can be
displayed:
•Surface distance
•VPath distance
•Angle of beam relative to
angle of weld
•Beam exit distance from
front of weld
