Physics Topic 4 : Waves

Definitions To Remember
Frequency
Period
Wavelength
Amplitude
Transverse Waves
Longitudinal Waves
What is Frequency?
Frequency is the number of waves that pass a
point in one second
What is Period?

This is the time it takes to complete a

whole cycle of wave
What is wavelength?
What is Amplitude?

Amplitude is the maximum displacement

from the undisturbed position to a
crest/peak or trough.
What is a transverse wave?

In a transverse wave, the vibrations or

oscillations are perpendicular to the
direction of travel or energy transfer.
What is a longitudinal wave?

In a longitudinal wave, the vibrations are

parallel to the direction of travel or energy
transfer.
4.1

Waves transfer energy and

information but do not transfer
matter.
