Saman dance is
a traditional
dance originally
from Gayo, a
small ethnic
from the coast of
Aceh.
SAMAN DANCE

The Saman dance is part of the

cultural heritage of the Gayo people
of Aceh province in Sumatra. Boys
and young men perform the Saman
sitting on their heels or kneeling in
tight rows. Each wears a black
costume embroidered with colourful
Gayo motifs symbolizing nature and
noble values

The leader sits in the middle of the

row and leads the singing of verses,
mostly in the Gayo language
SAMAN DANCE AND ISLAM

Saman Dance also

has influenced
spreading Islam in
Aceh. Back then,
elders used Saman
dance as
introduction of
Islam to people and
using shalawat as
music of dance
CONTROVERSY

Originally Saman dance is only

performed by men, but today not only
men but also female do Saman Dance.
Because of it many netizens from Aceh
criticised saman dance performed by
female.

There are many reasons why Saman

dance can not performed by female,
one of them is female body is too weak
to follow the movement of dance.
Naturally, the movement in Saman
dance is like the shake, lingang, surang-
saring, and kirep. Although it also have
some chest clapping and applause.
CONTROVERSY

In this dance, all dancers move

very closely, the movement which
is considered as the climax of all
movements is when the dancers
raise, and the gathering of friends'
hands. I think the movement is
like a wave. Where some dancers
ducked, some of them held back,
some raised their hands.
CELEBRATION

The Saman is performed to

celebrate national and religious
holidays, cementing
relationships between village
groups who invite each other for
performances

Saman Dance is considered into part of UNESCO in

2010
