FUNDAMENTALS
 Drone is an inexact term which
can refer to any unmanned
vehicle, regardless of its
operating environment
 UAS – Unmanned Aerial
System
 UAV – Unmanned Aerial
Vehicle
HISTORY

UAV technology improved throughout World

War II. It’s known that both the US and the
USSR used unmanned drones to some extent to
spy on each other during the Cold War.

2006 was the first year that the FAA issued a

commercial drone permit. They issued an average of
two of these permits a year for the next eight.

The Wright Brothers’ famous Kitty Hawk flight was in the

autumn of 1900, and only 16 years later Great Britain
developed the first pilotless winged aircraft: the Ruston
Proctor Aerial Target.
IMPORTANT TERMINOLOGY
 Endurance - When considering endurance, one of the most important
factors is how long the drone needs to be in the air.
 Speed - Multi-rotor drones are significantly slower than fixed-wing
drones, which travel at a high speed which impacts flight endurance.
 Range - A combination of the drone's speed and endurance will
determine the range, or how far a drone can travel in one flight without
landing.
 Altitude - In aircraft parlance, the maximum altitude is often called the
operational “ceiling” of the aircraft.

SOURCE
NAVIGATION
 UAS rely on global positioning
system (GPS) for navigation.
 A UAV is equipped with a GPS
receiver, which receives a
transmitted signal from satellites in
orbit around the Earth.
SENSORS AND PAYLOADS
 Sensors like LiDAR, IMU
and camera
Important payload is the
camera.
 Putting these sensors
together are advancing the
accuracy of the aircraft.
COMMUNICATION
POWER SOURCE

 Rotary wing - they use a lot of

power. They're not very
efficient. They don't glide at all.
So there's no aerodynamic
advantage.
Fixed wing are more efficient in
power source.
The hybrid system would take a
gas engine to drive a generator
that would then turn it into
electrical energy to drive an

SAR MISSION

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for

Search and Rescue
Search and Rescue requires
longer endurance
Longer battery life
