Collection of blood from animal is necessary for a wide range of scientific research and disease

diagnosis .it is important that blood sample collecting from animals should least stressful because
stress will affect the out come of the study.
 The method of blood collection should be described in the protocol approved by the institute
animal ethics committee.
 It should be least painful
 Adequate training is required for blood collection.
 Animal handling and restraint is an essential pre requisite to blood sampling.
 Blood collection vials e.g. syringes , vacutainer tubes
 Needles or vacutainer needles
 Restraints e.g. halter, nose pliers
 Clippers
 Antiseptic
 Gauze or cotton
o Scrubs
o Shoes or boots
o Disposable gloves
o Eye protection
– Restrain the animal
– Remove hair with hair clipper and clean superficial skin debris
– Clean the area with alcohol
– Use new needle and syringe for each animal ( gauge 18, 20 ,22, 23) the length and size of
gauge are important considerations. Size appropriate for animal
– Locate and tract the course of vein
– Dilate and fix the position of vein
– Pierce the skin with a needle / cannula
– Angel of penetration is almost parallel to vein
– Collect blood in heparinized container /vacutainer needle
– The vacutainer tube must be labelled with the identifying number or name of animal
– Continuous pressure applied immediately to the puncture site to assist blood clotting and
reduce the risk of hematoma formation.
– A needle and syringes may be used to collect blood from jugular vein.
– The vacutainer may be used to collect blood from coccygeal vein.
– Needle selection is based on the size of the animal and the site of the venipuncture.
– Handle needles with care .
– Do not drop the test tubes.
– Handle the tubes care fully to avoid damaging them.
– Do not shake the blood.
