INTRODUCTION – WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION ?

• Air supplies us with oxygen which is essential

for our bodies to live.
• Air pollution is the introduction of
particulates, biological molecules, or other
harmful materials into Earth's atmosphere,
causing disease, death to humans, damage to
other living organisms such as food crops, or
the natural or built environment.
• Air pollution may come from anthropogenic
(human impact ) or natural sources .
INTRODUCTION -INDOOR & OUTDOOR POLLUTION
CAUSES OF AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution can result from both human and natural actions.

Natural events that pollute the air include

• forest fires,
• volcanic eruptions
• wind erosion
• pollen dispersal
• evaporation of organic compounds
• natural radioactivity

Natural air pollutants include pollen, spores, marsh gas, volcanic gases and
synthesis of harmful chemicals by electric storms and solar flares.

Pollution from natural occurrences are not very often.

CAUSES OF AIR POLLUTION
Human Actions that pollute the air include
• Fumes from car / vehicle exhaust which contain dangerous
gases such as carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen,
hydrocarbons and particulates.
• traffic, power plants, and industrial and chemical plants
factories because they give out harmful gases.
• burning wood fuel for their cooking and heating, smoking
cigarettes, these cause indoor air pollution
• open burning of refuse and leaves, massive quantities of
construction waste and substantial loss of forests ,Garbage
Incinerated at high temperatures.
CAUSES OF AIR POLLUTION
DID YOU KNOW ?
• Last year the Environmental Preference Index ranked India
174 out of 178 countries for air quality.
• A World Health Organization (WHO) survey last year found
that 13 of the most polluted 20 cities in the world were in
India. The capital, Delhi, was the most polluted city in the
world, the survey said.
• It is a leading cause of premature death in India, with about
620,000 people dying every year from pollution-related
diseases, says the WHO.
• The rising and health-endangering pollution has been mainly
blamed on a huge increase in vehicles, particularly diesel-
driven cars, on Indian roads.
EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
• Smog (Smoke and fog)
• Acid rain
• The greenhouse effect
• “Holes” in the ozone layer.
Each of these problems has
serious implications for our
health and well-being as well as
for the whole environment.
EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
When acid rain falls over an area, it can kill trees, harm
animals ,fish and other wild life .

Acid rain changes the chemistry of lakes and streams that the
rain water flows into.
EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
• Air pollution effects human life ,animals and
plant causing global effects.

• Polluted air irritates the eye ,nose and throat

and pollutants like lead accumulate in the body.

•Respiratory infections such as bronchitis and

pneumonia are caused

•Lung cancer is a disease caused by polluted air

which leads to death .
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Variety of effective laws have been set for the
regulation of air pollution , there are still plenty of
things we can do to prevent this

Drive less, Carpool , Walk or ride a bicycle

Shop by phone or mail ,Ride on public transport,
Telecommute
Save energy, use solar power
Reduce waste
Select Air friendly products
PLANT MORE TREES !

So follow these steps to prevent air pollution!!

PREVENTIVE MEASURES
A National Air Quality Index
(AQI), launched in India will
initially monitor air quality in
10 cities

It is aimed at improving air

quality in urban areas, as it will
improve public awareness in
cities to take steps for air
pollution mitigation".

The new index will initially

cover 10 cities and will be
extended to more than 60
cities
Be Part of the Solution, not Pollution !
