Nuclear energy

• Nuclear energy is the energy that holds together the nucleus of atoms. Atoms
are the most simple blocks that make up matter.

Jens Martensson 5
Nuclear Reactor

• A nuclear reactor is a device in which nuclear reactions are

generated, and the chain reaction is controlled to release large
amount of steady heat, thereby producing energy .

Jens Martensson 6
Elements / Reactors

• At the centre of every atom is a nucleus. Breaking that

nucleus apart or combining 2 nuclei together can release
large amounts of energy. Nuclear weapons can use that
energy to create an explosion.

● Uranium: is found throughout the world and can be mined from
mineral deposits. However, only a small fraction ( less than 1%) of
naturally occurring uranium is uranium-235. Producing usable
uranium require the process of “enrichment”.
● Plutonium: can also be used but only occurs naturally in trace
amounts. It can however be produced as a fission by-product in
nuclear reactors, then separated by a process called "reprocessing”.

Facts

• For more than 50 years, nuclear energy has

provided the world with reliable
electricity. Today, more than 450 plants
are operating in more than 30 countries.
• These plants generate around 11 percent
of the world’s electricity without emitting
greenhouse gases.

Jens Martensson 13
BIGGEST MYTHS

• Radiation is man made

• Nuclear reactors can explode like
bombs
• It's not safe to be near a nuclear
energy plant
