Torsion

Torque (T)- or twisting moment or torsional moment, The component of the

resultant couple that tends to twist (rotate) the body

Assumptions in Torsion Formula Derivation

1. twisting causes the circles to remain circles , and each
longitudinal grid line deforms into a helix that intersects
the circles at equal angles
2. the cross sections at the ends of the shaft will remain
flat — that is, they do not warp or bulge in or out
3. radial lines remain straight during the deformation
From these observations we can assume that if the angle
of twist is small , the length of the shaft and its radius will
remain unchanged .

Sample Problem
1. The steel shaft is made from two segments: AC has a diameter of 0.5 in., and CB has a diameter of 1 in. If the
shaft is fixed at its ends A and B and subjected to a torque of 500 lb-ft, determine the maximum shear stress in
the shaft. 𝐺𝑠𝑡 = 10.8 𝑥 103 𝑘𝑠𝑖.

Sample Problem
2. The assembly consists of two sections of galvanized steel pipe connected together using a reducing coupling
at B. The smaller pipe has an outer diameter of 0.75 in. and an inner diameter of 0.68 in., whereas the larger
pipe has an outer diameter of 1 in. and an inner diameter of 0.86 in. If the pipe is tightly secured to the wall at
C, determine the maximum shear stress developed in each section of the pipe when the couple shown is
applied to the handles of the wrench.
