PROCEDURES
1. Open 3 commercial tea bags,
take the weights of the leaves.
Boil in 100 ml of distilled water for 5
mins. (Cover beaker with watch glass.)

SOLID-LIQUID
EXTRACTION 2. Extract liquid from the leaves.
Cool the aqueous tea extract to room
temperature in an ice bath.
3. Extract the aqueous solution with 20
mol of dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) in a
separatory funnel.
after 2 mins transfer the
dichloromethane layer in a clean flask.
LIQUID-LIQUID
EXTRACTION 4. Repeat previous step twice with 20 ml
of fresh CH2Cl2.
Combine all CH2Cl2 extract. Discard the
aqueous tea layer.
5. Transfer the combined CH2Cl2 extract
back to the separatory funnel and wash
this with 20 ml of 6 M NaOH solution.
Draw the CH2Cl2 layer onto a clean dry
flask containing half-a-spatula of
anhydrous Na2SO4. Decant onto an
EVAPORATION
evaporating dish.

6. Concentrate the CH2Cl2 layer over a

water bath and evaporate to dryness.

7. Calculate % yield.

DISCUSSION
What the role Sodium carbonate serves two main
of sodium functions:
carbonate • to place caffeine in a more basic
and sodium environment so that it has a
higher affinity for
sulfate in dichloromethane
the • to cause the tannins to form

Sodium sulfate was added to the extraction to absorb any water that escaped from the tea and the
remaining fluid was decanted and rinsed
