Skeleton of Foot- Tarsus, Metatarsus & Phalanges

Tarsus
 7 in no.
 Proximal row-Talus above &
Calcaneus below,
 Distal row (From medial to lateral)
 3 cuneiform- medial, intermediate,
lateral & Cuboid
 Navicular in between proximal
& distal rows

1
TALUS
 Main bone through which body
weight is transmitted from leg to foot
 Lies between tibia above & calcaneum
below,
 gripped on the sides by two malleoli,
 It has no muscular attachments

2
Parts - Head, neck & body,
Body of Talus
 Trochlear surface articulates with tibia , ankle joint
 Inferior surface with calcaneum, subtalar joint,
 Medial surface to medial malleolus & lateral surface to lateral
malleolus. Infront with navicular bone
 Post surface groove for tendon of Flexor Hallucis Longus
 No any muscular attachment but many ligaments- deltoid.

3
CALCANEUM
 Largest tarsal bone,
 anterior surface articulates cuboid,
 superior surface to talus
 Posterior Surace- Prominence of heel & Tendo calcaneus (Achilles
tendon if attached)
 Transmits body weight to ground

4
NAVICULAR BONE
 Boat shaped,
 between talus posteriorly & cuneiforms anteriorly.

5
CUNEIFORM BONES-
 Medial, intermediate & lateral Cuneiform bone (Wedge shaped)
 Edge of the wedge of Medial forms dorsal surface
 Edge of the wedge of Intermediate & lateral form plantar surface
 Medial articulates with 1st metatarsal distally, navicular proximally,
intermediate cuneiform laterally
 Intermediate-2nd metatarsal distallymedial medially, lat cuneiform laterally,
navicular proximally
 Lateral- 3rd metatarsal distally, medial surface to intermediate cuneiform
lateral surface to cuboids & navicular proximally

Plantar surface

11
Cuboid
 Lateral bone of distal row,
 Situated in front of calcaneum & behind the 4th & 5th metatarsal
 Proximal surface articulates calcaneum, distal surface to 4th & 5th
metatarsals, medial surface to lat cuneiform

12
METATARSUS
 Miniature long bone, 5 in number from medial to lateral,

Parts - base (proximally), Shaft & head (distally)

 Base – lies proximally & larger than head
Articulates with one another & with distal row of tarsal bones
 Shaft – Dorsal surface conxex & planter concave
 Head – distal surface articulates with proximal phalnx of its own

13
Phalanges
 Similar to phalanges in fingers 2 for great toe ,3 for each of
the other toes, but smaller in size.
 Parts – Base, shaft & head (distally)
