POLYMERIZATION

POLYMERIZATION IS THE REACTION OF

SMALL MONOMER UNITS
(e.g ethylene/ethene) TO FORM LARGE
POLYMER CHAIN (e.g polyethylene)
POLYMERIZATION OF POLYETHENE (PE)
Ethylene/ Ethene is also used to make many
intermediate compound include:

 Styrene to make polystyrene (PS)

 Vinyl chloride to make polyvinylchloride (PVC)
 Methyl to make polypropylene (PP)
POLYMERIZATION OF POLYEVINYL CHLORIDE
(PVC)
POLYMERIZATION OF POLYEVINYL CHLORIDE
(PVC)
POLYMERIZATION OF POLYPROPENE
(PP)
POLYMERIZATION OF POLYPROPENE
(PP)
ADDITIONAL POLYMERIZATION
Formed by addition reaction of monomers
without loss of atom.

Involve in one identical monomer unit.

Monomers are unsaturated molecules.

They are generally chain growth polymers.

CONDENSATION POLYMERIZATION

Formed by condensation reaction with elimination

of small molecule e.g H2O

Involve in more monomers unit.

Monomers units must have two active functional

groups.

They are generally step growth polymers.
