Aim
• To study the response of the horizontally curved box girder by changing the radius
of curvature and span length (curvature) with constant gradient.

4
Need of the study
• For safe and efficient traffic flow particularly at the intersection ,interchanges are
provided.
• Horizontally curved box girders are widely used for highway interchanges and are
generally subjected to additional torsional moment.
• Sometimes due to site condition horizontally curved bridges are provided with the
gradient ,so at that time magnitude of torsional moment can be increase which
lead to overturn the bridge superstructure and cause sudden failure of girder.
• Combination of horizontal curve and gradient which can be affect to the response
of structure, so its essential to analysis of combine system.
5
Scope of Study
• The Present study is related to investigate the response of curved box girder with
constant gradient.
• The cross section of the bridge is limited to a single cell trapezoidal box girder and
cross section of girder shall be kept unchanged.
• A linear static and dynamic analysis shall be done and response spectrum method
shall be adopted for dynamic analysis as per 1893-2016(P-3).
6
• Deviation angles and curvature length(span-length) shall be varied from 30 to 90
degree and 15m to 30m at the interval of 15 degree and 5m respectively and constant
gradient 1 in 25 shall be considered.
• Generally at the intersection traffic congestion arise, in that case for efficient and safe
transportation of congested traffic flow ,there is a requirement of interchanges.
• Analysis of such structure becomes more difficult, so at that time structural analysis
capabilities of software have removed many of the limitations.

9
• Generally, the horizontally curved girders subjected to bending moment and torsional
moment simultaneously because of curvature. In addition, the torsional moment may
generate negative reaction forces at the supports and which may lead to overturn the
girder.
10
Figure : 2 Failure of curved girder ,Surat ,India.
Box girder
• Box girders are more suitable to curved girder due to their structural efficiency, ease
of maintenance, economy of construction, durability, and aesthetic.
• Analysis and design of box-girder bridges are very complex because of its three
dimensional behaviour consisting of torsion, and bending in longitudinal a transverse
directions.
• When a point load is applied on a box ,result is warping and cross-sectional distortion
will occurred..
• However, in curved box bridges, twisting/torsional moments are created for even
symmetrical loading and a small amount of distortional deformations will occur.

Summary of literature review :
• From the literature it can be summarized as,
• The effect of variation in curvature and span-length which affect the various
parameter such as flexural response, dynamic response, stability of girder and
distortion stress.
• Its essential to consider stability of girder against the overturning because girder
subjected to bending and torsional moment simultaneously.
• Actual dominant modes and the corresponding mode shapes by the changes in the
natural frequencies and its depends on radius of curvature and span-length
25
• The overall structural response of the thin-walled box-girder bridges becomes
complex since it comprises of distortion, warping, and shear lag, in addition to usual
flexure (in longitudinal and transverse directions), shear and torsional action
26
Research gap
• In previous literatures, longitudinal moment ,transverse moment, torsional
moment and shear force have been found by changing the radius of curvature and
curvature length, but sometimes due to geometric restriction on the site
,horizontally curved girder is provided with gradient.

28
Problem definition :
• For highway interchanges horizontally curved bridges are used and horizontally
curved girder brides are additionally subjected to torsional moment. Sometimes due
to site condition horizontally curved bridges are provided with the gradient ,so at
that time magnitude of torsional moment can be increase which lead to overturn the
bridge superstructure and cause sudden failure of girder.
29
Selection of method for analysis :
• There are four methods for analysis of curved girder,
1) Simple beam theory
2) Folded plate method
3) Finite strip method
4) Finite element method
• Among four method, finite element method is most appropriate to model and
analysis of complex geometry.
• Thus for the present work, finite element method has selected for modeling and
analysis.
30
Selection of software for modeling and analysis :
• Various software are available for analysis such as CSIBridge, Midas civil , Ansys,
Staadpro etc.
• CSiBridge is easy to use, integrated software for modeling, analysis, and design of
bridge structures and it gives more appropriate result.
31
Parametric study :
• Two parameters have been carried out for the parametric study is as follow :
1) Deviation angles of roadway
2) Curvature (span length) length
• Radius of curvature is found for corresponding deviation angles and span length.
• Horizontal Curve has been designed as per IRC :38 : 1988( Guild lines for design of
horizontal of curves for highway).
• Gradient has considered as constant and gradient 1 in 25 shall be considered.

As per IRC 38 : 1988 , minimum radius should not be less than 15m.
o For validation of live load application as per IRC in software, one of the examples
of bridge has been taken form N. Krishna Raju book –Design of bridges.
o Example data :
o By courbon’s method ,the longitudinal moments and the shear force have been
computed for D.L and L.L manually for interior girder.
o Modeling of T-girder has been done in CSIbridge software and run the linear static
analysis.
o No. of span = 3
o A concentrated load of 445 kN is applied in the middle of the midspan with three
different locations, on the top of the outer web, middle web, and inner web. 38
o Modeling of girder has been done in CSIbridge software and run the linear static
