Mathematics Teaching Strategies 2

Repetition

By repeating and reviewing previous formulas,

lessons, and information, students are better able to
comprehend concepts at a faster rate.

Mathematics Teaching Strategies 3

Timed testing

When the test shows that students are answering

more questions correctly within time period,
teachers are able to determine that students have
mastered the basic skills.

Mathematics Teaching Strategies 4

Pair work

Since the pairs are working as a team, the students

can discuss the problems and work together to
solve the issues.

Mathematics Teaching Strategies 5

Manipulation Tools

The use of blocks, fruits, balls, or other manipulation

tools help students learn the basics of place value,
addition, subtraction, and other areas of basic math.

Mathematics Teaching Strategies 6

Math Games

Math games provide the opportunity to make the

lesson interesting and encourage students to
remember the concepts.

Manipulative

Manipulatives are concrete objects that students can

physically arrange or operate in some way to
represent a variety of mathematical relationships.
(Cass et al., 2003)

Manipulative
Piaget’s theory speaks to the idea that children should
learn through their senses; and, that it is necessary
for them to experience and manipulate the ideas
that they are learning. Increased student
engagement in the learning process can lead to
higher achievement (Ross & Willson, 2012).

Algebra Tiles

Mathematics Teaching Strategies 13

Algebra Tiles

Algebra tiles are used to model integers and

variables to aid in learning addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division of positive and negative
values.

Mathematics Teaching Strategies 14

Algebra Tiles Pieces

The RED pieces are additive inverses for their

counterparts. When used together, a “zero pair” is
created (they cancel each other out).
