What is Non-Verbal Communication?
The term nonverbal communication was introduced in 1956 by psychiatrist
Jurgen Ruesch and author Weldon Kees in the book "Nonverbal
Communication: Notes on the Visual Perception of Human Relations.“
We often use signs and gestures instead of spoken words to communicate.
These non- word communications basically belongs to the criteria non-
verbal communications i.e. every non-word communication is non-verbal
communication

It can be defined as : “The type of communication which is not based on


words is called non-verbal communication. Body movements, expressions,
signs, gestures, postures, touch, voice patterns, sound patterns, color
patterns etc. comprise non-verbal communication ”

Nonverbal Communication = Communication without words

verbal communication and nonverbal communication are interconnected


and they operate together in communication.

Actions speak louder than words


Importance of
Nonverbal Communication

• We communicate not only through words but also through other alternative Courses.
• A receiver derives 93% of the meaning of a message through non-verbal communication
and only 7% through verbal communication. Among these:

• 7% VERBAL (Conveyed through words)


• 38% VOCAL (intonation, pitch, pauses, etc.)

Purpose for eye contact


• Speaking information
• Showing attention and interest
• Inviting and controlling interaction
• Domineering, threatening,
influencing Others
• Providing feedback during speech
• Revealing attitudes

• Too much eye contact: dominance, lack of respect, threat, wish to Insult
• Too little eye contact: not paying attention, impolite, insincere, shy
• Withdrawing eyes: signal of submission

• SLOUCHING WITH FORWARD LEAN: lowliness
• MODERATELY UPRIGHT: enthusiasm, friendliness

PROXEMICS
Proxemics is the study of space around us, how we arrange it and what we arrange
in it. It is thus personal space language.

Touch(Haptic Communication)
Functional/professional: This is touch between colleagues and professionals. For
example, a handshake or a slap on the back. It is sometimes used to show authority
and dominance.
Touch(Haptic Communication)
Social/polite: This is used with acquaintances, or with people in a group who are
friends, but not necessarily close friends. It includes a light touch on the arm to get
attention, or hugging team members when you win a match. It is generally positive,
friendly and affirming.

Friendship/warmth: Touch here includes many of the lighthearted gestures that
show you like, and understand, each other. For example, “high 5-ing” a friend when
you see each other, or giving them hug when they share bad news.

Love/intimacy: This type of touch is associated with emotional closeness, trust and
vulnerability. For example, we see this in the way a child clings to his or her mother
when they are feeling sad or afraid. Also, holding hands, or embracing each other,
as a dating couple.
