Bioelectric Potentials

Bioelectric Potentials
• Generate own monitoring signals
• Nerve conduction, brain activity,
heartbeat, muscle activity.
• Ionic voltages produced as a result of
electrochemical activity.
Ions
• The cells of the body are surrounded by
body fluids.
• This fluids are conductive solutions
containing charged atoms known as ions.
• (Na+),Potassium(K+) and Chloride(Cl-).
Resting Potential
• Permits the entry of potassium & chloride ions but
blocks the entry of sodium ions.
• Value = -60 mV to -100 mV
• A cell in resting state =Polarized.
Action Potential
+20 mV

Direction of propagation
Depolarization
• The process of changing from the resting state
to the action potential is called depolarization.

Net Height
• Net Weight = Peak of the action potential - the
resting potential
Refractory period
• Time during which the cell can’t respond to
any new stimulus.
