AMAZON RAIN FOREST


The Amazon rainforest , also known as Amazonia or
the Amazon Jungle, the largest and most biodiverse tract
of tropical rainforest in the world, that covers most of
the Amazon basin of South America.
Stretches 7,000,000 km2 of which 5,500,000 km2 are
covered by the rainforest.
This region includes territory belonging to 9 nations:
 Brazil, with 60% of the rainforest, Peru with
13%, Colombia with 10%, and with minor amounts
in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname
and French Guiana.

Amazon River and its tributaries,

 An 80% increase in deforestation compared to last year.

 Smoke from the fires spreading all along Brazil to the


east Atlantic coast.
 9,000 fires is recorded Last week.
 Smoke has covered nearly half of the country and
neighboring Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay.
 The Amazon shrunk by 1345 square km in july
What are the causes?
Most fires in the Amazon are caused by humans , set
either accidentally or intentionally.

Cattle grazers and Soybean growers
Infrastructure development
 Mining, timber and development firms
Loggers and Cattle ranchers who use a “slash and burn”
method to clear land.
