 It is an ensemble of woodwind, brass and
percussion instruments in the Philippines
 usually play in fiestas, religious, and civic
celebrations
 repertoire may include folk songs, popular
music, dance music.

have two or more bands. They sometimes
participate and even compete in many town band
competitions.

Lupang Hinirang
It was composed by Julian Felipe n
march time tempo and initially
performed by the San Francisco de
Malabon Band at the Proclamation
of Philippine Independence on June
12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite.
It is considered as “incidental music” which
means a background music set into a
particular event/occasion in a dramatic
mood.
Jose Palma wrote the lyrics adpted from the
Spanish poem “Filipinas” and entitled it
“Himno Nacional
Filipino”

woodwind instruments that are made of
bamboo.

The shape and the sizes are similar to


brass band instruments but have different
sounds.
The MUSIKONG BUMBONG playing

The D’ Original Malabon Musikong


Bumbong started as a plain Banda de
Boca (meaning “bibig” or mouth) in Barrio
Tonsuya, Malabon in 1896.
Felix Ramos was both the founder and
inventor of the bamboo instruments.
The first members of the band were all
Katipuneros.
The band was renamed several times but
it is currently known as Musikawayan
under the leadership of P/Lt. Col. Gilbert
M. Ramos, a fourth generation
descendant of the band’s founder.

PANGKAT KAWAYAN
• It is popularly known as the “Singing
Bamboos of the Philippines”.
• It is an orchestra that plays music using non-
traditional bamboo instruments.
• Founded in 1966, It is always composed of
young students who are selected from Quezon
City and Manila Schools.

represents a note and is tuned to

It is made of hollow pieces of
bamboo that has been put together
and seve as the orchestra’s wind

Each BUMBONG represents one
note; to produce the sound it has to be
blown trough a mouthpiece
KALATOK (Bamboo Knocker)
a percussion instruments made of
pieces of bamboos that are strung
together with pieces of bamboo
with varying tones when struck
by a rubber mallet.
TALUNGGATING (Bamboo Marimba)
Made from bamboo that follows the
musical scale and style of the typical
xylophone.
It plays the melody
Mallets made out of rattan and
rubber are used to play the
instrument.
KALAGONG
Wind instrument that produces a
hollow gong-like sound
Played by tapping the top wholes
of the bamboos by two flat and
flexible surface tapper

TULALI (Bamboo Flute)
