Dance TINIKLING
As varied are the people of the Philippines, so too are
the dance. There are many dances performed in the
Philippine island such as the popular “Tinikling” to
the eroticized “Pangalay” to the skill-based
interpretation of the “Banga” and Spanish-tinged
“Jota”.
Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance which
originated during the Spanish colonial era. The dance
involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding
bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in
coordination with one or more dancers who step over
and in between the poles in a dance. It is traditionally
danced to rondalla music, a sort of serenade played
by an ensemble of stringed instruments which
originated in Spain during the middle ages.
PANDANGGO
Pandanggo is a South East Asian
Dance style originating from the
popular Spanish dance style
“Fandango”. This folk dance
originated in Philippines, and is
popular in the rural areas of the
country. Apparently several
versions of this dance style exist
in the Pilipino culture.
Furthermore this dance is mainly
performed during religious
rituals and processions.

our country to how it is as of today. During the period the Spaniards have
established Christianity on us. A wood sculpture I encountered copied a
famous sculpture of Michelangelo its name similar to the original “Pieta”
Although the sculpture creators in unknown from this we come to the
conclusion that the Spaniards had really engraved Christianity upon us.
The Triump of Science over Death (by Dr. Jose Rizal)
--- Also known as Scientia is a clay sculpture made by Dr. Jose Rizal as
a gift to his friend Ferdinand Bluemintritt. The statue depicts a young
nude woman with flowing hair ,standing on a skull while bearing a torch .
The woman symbolizes the ignorance of humankind during the Dark
Ages of the History ,while the torch she bears symbolizes the
enliggtment science bring to the world. The woman stand atop the skull,a
symbol of death, to signify the victory that humankind aims to achieve by
conquering the bane of death through scientific advancement .

Music Harana
Nowadays, we call it old-fashioned
serenading. Harana originated from the
Spanish Era here in the Philippines. The
Haran is practiced in small towns and rural
places. This is how men court the women
from before. A man accompanied by his
friends would visit a woman and sing to her
love songs to make her fall in love with him.
The man is usually accompanied by his
friends to give him moral support and also
help him with the song.
Harana is also called “Habanera Filipina”
this is so because its rhythmic element came
from the Spanish Tango or Habanera.
Kundiman
Another traditional way of serenading
is the Kundiman. Kundiman came
from the province of Batangas. The
Kundiman may be similar to Harana
because the song is dedicated to a
woman. Although in Kundiman a man
is singing about his longing for loved
one. This was also used in the Spanish
Era as a means to express ones love
for country and longing for freedom.
The Kundiman was used in this way
because the Spaniards did not allow
songs pertaining to patriotism.
