Analysis and

Interpretation in
Contemporary Art
Postmodernism Art
• is a body of art movements that sought
to contradict some aspects of
modernism or some aspects that
emerged or developed in its aftermath.
In general, movements such as
intermedia, installation art, conceptual
art and multimedia, particularly involving
video are described as postmodern.
Modernism
• Modern art includes artistic work
produced during the period extending
roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and
denotes the styles and philosophy of the
art produced during that era. The term is
usually associated with art in which the
traditions of the past have been thrown
aside in a spirit of experimentation.
Aesthetics
• Is the branch of philosophy that deals
with the nature, beauty, and value of art
objects and experience.
• It involves appreciating, understanding,
and judging the value of art.
• An aesthetic judgement should be
neither personal nor relative.
Psychic Distance
•The viewer should rise above
time, place, and personal biases
to reach a judgement of art to
which all reasonable people
would agree.
Art Analysis and
Interpretation
Art Analysis
• Starts with a description of an art.
• Here, the viewer focuses on beauty,
design qualities and the value of an
art.
• This where we determine what the
feature suggest and decide why the
artist use these to convey specific
ideas.
Analysis
•Requires an understanding of
the content by separating the
parts of the subject matter.
•This can lead to grasping the
artwork's organizational
structure, nature, function, and
value.
Art Interpretation
•Employed by the viewer after
describing and analyzing an
artwork.
•Here, focus is on the expressive
qualities, the meaning, theme,
mood, or idea communicated by
the artist.
