Milk turns into plastic. The ‘casein’ molecule in the milk
reacts with the acid molecules and become a solid-mass
ABSTRACT plastic.
 In 1900 – 1945 ‘Casein Plastic’was used in jewellery for
the royals eg: the queen of England.
USES  Moreover, this plastic can be moulded into different
shapes, for making toys etc.
 This is an experiment working with polymers.
THEORY  Polymers are molecules that have formed a regular chain structure.
 Milk contains molecules of a protein called ‘casein’.
 During this reaction between warm milk and acid the casein
molecules unfold and form long chains called a polymer. Polymer
can be moulded and shaped which makes it a plastic.
 In this case it is called casein plastic because of the type of
molecules that creates the plastic.
 Milk
 Vinegar (acetic acid)
 Cup
 Seive
MATERIAL
 Spoon
 Thermometer
 Heating plate
PROCEDURE  Heat a cup of milk till almost boiling temperature i.e 120°F
or 49°C & take it off burner.
 Add 4tsp of vinegar in the milk and stir for a minute.
 Pour it into a strainer.
 Scrape the residue on the paper towel.
 Pat out the liquid from the residue.
 The obtained plastic is environmental friendly as it is
biodegradable.
ADVANTAGES  This method for producing plastic is much cheaper and
cost effective than other methods.
 This plastic isn’t durable.

DISADVANTAGES  For the production of this kind of plastic, milk

consumption would be increased.
