History of LASER

Invented in 1958 by
Charles Townes
(Nobel prize in
Physics 1964) and
Arthur Schawlow of
Bell Laboratories.

Originally called

INTRODUCTION
A laser is a device that
transforms light of
various frequencies into a
chromatic radiation in the
visible, infrared, and
ultraviolet regions with
all the waves in phase
capable of mobilizing
immense heat and power
when focused at close
range.

RUBY LASER
Laser parameters and tissue interactions

Beam features: An important feature of most laser beams

used on the skin is the distribution of intensity across the
beam cross-section

1) Spot size: The energy and power density of the laser beam depends on the
size of the spot, being inversely proportional to the square of the radius of the
spot size..

2)Pulse duration: Laser light can be delivered continuously or in a pulse

mode. Continuous delivery carries higher risk of damage to untargeted tissues

OPHTALMOLOGY
Ophthalmology is the
branch of medicine which
deals with the physiology
and diseases of the eye.

LASIK or Lasik (laser-

assisted in situ
keratomileusis) is a type
of refractive surgery for
correcting myopia,
hyperopia, and
astigmatism.

TYPE OF LASER USED
Excimer laser-is a form of ultraviolet laser
which is commonly used in eye surgery
An excimer laser typically uses a
combination of an inert gas (argon, or xenon)
and a reactive gas (fluorine or chlorine).
Under the condition of electrical stimulation,
a pseudo-molecule called an excimer is
created, which can only exist in an energized
state and gives rise to laser light in the
ultraviolet range.
DENTISTRY
Dentistry, is the branch
of medicine that is
involved in the
diagnosis, prevention,
and surgical or non-
surgical treatment of
diseases, disorders and
conditions of the oral
cavity.

ADVANTAGES OF LASERS IN
MEDICAL SECTOR

Diverse applications

 Less Pain

Efficient

High Success Rate

Wavelength
CONCLUSION
Medicine has benefited enormously. The best-
known medical application of the laser is in
eye surgery to repair detached retinas.
Medical research into the very foundations of
life is being pursued by selectively destroying
minute cellular structures in cytoplasm to
determine their individual functions. Thus, the
laser has become an important new tool of
geneticists.
