INTRODUCTION
Photosynthesis:

 Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and

other organisms to convert light energy
into chemical energy that can later
be released to fuel the organisms' activities
(energy transformation).
Artificial Photosynthesis:
 Artificial photosynthesis is a chemical
process that replicates the natural process
of photosynthesis.
 The purpose of artificial photosynthesis is to
produce a fuel from sunlight that can be
stored conveniently and used when sunlight is
not available, by using direct processes, that
is, to produce a solar fuel.
Solar Fuel Production Process:
 Direct Process: harness the energy in sunlight
to produce a fuel without intermediary energy
conversions.
 Indirect Process: have solar energy converted
to another form of energy first (such
as biomass or electricity) that can then be
used to produce a fuel.

Energy Production Process
Biomass:
 Photosynthesis can be described by the
simplified chemical reaction:

6H2O + 6CO2 + energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2

 Where C6H12O6 is glucose

 Approximately 114 kilocalories of free energy

are stored in plant biomass for every mole of
CO2 fixed during photosynthesis.
 Photosynthetic microalgae are potential
candidates for utilizing excessive amounts of
CO2, since when cultivated these organisms
are capable of fixing CO2 to produce energy
and chemical compounds upon exposure to
sunlight.
 The derivation of energy from algal biomass is
an attractive concept in that unlike fossil
fuels, algal biomass is rather uniformly
distributed over much of the earth's surface,
and its utilization would make no net
contribution to increasing atmospheric
CO2 levels.
Electricity:
Advantages:

 Environmental friendly

 Could be used to produce biofuels

Disadvantages:

 Not practical on a large scale

 Cost
