Simple Presentation
IDENTIFICATION DANGEROUS CARGO

Proper shipping name is the standard technical name to describe the hazard properties and the composition of
dangerous goods. You need to choose a UN number (usually, 4 digits) and a proper shipping name from
Dangerous Goods List that can most accurately describe your dangerous goods. They will be used to label
dangerous goods. They also need to be included in Dangerous Goods Declaration and the section 14 of Safety
Data Sheets.
MARKING
Marking means a descriptive name, identification number, instructions, cautions, weight,
specification, or UN marks, or combinations thereof, required on outer packagings of hazardous
materials or dangerous goods.

The marking required:

1.Must be durable, in English, and printed on or affixed to
the surface of a package or on a label, tag, or sign.
2.Must be displayed on a background of sharply
contrasting color;
3.Must be unobscured by labels or attachments; and
4.Must be located away from any other marking (such as
advertising) that could substantially reduce its
effectiveness.
LABELLING

Labels identify the specific primary and

subsidiary hazards posed by the
materials in a dangerous goods
package. These methods of
communication rely on specific colors,
codes, and pictograms to clearly and
immediately identify the type of
materials in the package.
PLACARDING
A placard load refers to a vehicle carrying over a certain amount of dangerous goods (other than explosives,
infectious and radioactive substances) that is required to display placards (i.e. Class label or Emergency
Information Panel) during transport.
A vehicle must be placarded if it is carrying:
•dangerous goods in a receptacle, other than an article, with a capacity of more than 500 L or more than 500 kg,
STOWAGE
Handling dangerous cargo requires special care due to the inherent hazardous nature of the cargo
and applicable carriage regulations. The general provisions for segregation between the various
classes of dangerous goods are shown in "Segregation table" (IMDG Code Chapter 7.2.1.16). In
addition to the general provisions, there may be a need to segregate a particular substance,
material or article from other goods which could contribute to its hazard.

IMDG code & related guideline -IMDG Code means International Maritime Dangerous Goods
Code . Transport of dangerous goods by sea is regulated by IMDG Code in order to prevent injury
to persons or damage to ships and their cargoes. Transport of marine pollutants is primarily
regulated to prevent harm to the marine environment.

The objective of the IMDG Code is to enhance the safe transport of dangerous goods while
facilitating the free unrestricted movement of such goods. The IMDG Code contains details of all
the numerous dangerous cargoes offered for carriage by sea and includes solid, liquid and
gaseous substances. Explosive, flammable, oxidising and radioactive substances are also included
and recommended means of their containment or packing are listed, as is all manner of other
information relating to the product. Future updating of the Code, on two-year basis, are foreseen
in order to take into account technological developments.
SEPARATION
In situations where large amounts or multiple dangerous
goods are required at a site the strategy
of separation and segregation combined with
containment is adopted. Separation is the purposeful
creation of a barrier between incompatible substances so
they can never come together.
