Informatics
What is Nursing
Informatics?
Nursing Informatics
Nursing Informatics (NI) is a title
that evolved from the French word
“informatics” which referred to the
field of applied computer science
concerned with the processing of
information such as nursing
information (Nelson, 2013).
In the early 1960s, the computer was
introduced into healthcare facilities for the
processing of basic administrative tasks.
Thus the computer revolution in healthcare
began and led to today’s healthcare
information technology (HIT) and/or
electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Computerization and/or electronic processing affect
all aspects of health- care delivery including:
(a) provision and documentation of patient care,
(b) education of healthcare providers,
(c) scientific research for advancing healthcare
delivery,
(d) administration of healthcare delivery services,
(e) reimbursement for patient care,
(f) legal and ethical implications, as well as
(d) safety and quality issues.
Nurses are increasingly becoming involved with systems used for:
• planning,
• budgeting, and
• policy-making for patient care services,

as well as enhancing nursing education and distance learning with new

media modalities.
Computers are also used to:
• document and process real-time plans of care,
• support nursing research,
• test new systems,
• design new knowledge data- bases,
• develop data warehouses, and
• advance the role of nursing in the healthcare industry and nursing
science.
WHY DO WE NEED TO STUDY NI?
In the 21st century, information is doubling every 5 years, if not
tripling in quantity and quality

Information is POWER

Technology also facilitates the creative process in nurses,

affording amazing vehicles for PATIENT EDUCATION,
TEACHING and LEARNING, and providing general health
promotion and prevention information on a global scale.
1957 – First coined by Karl Steinbuch as
“Informatiks”.

1962 – Phillipe Dreyfus used “Informatique”

Walter Bauer – translated it to “Informatics”

In 1980, Sholes and Barber applied this new
term to
the art of science and nursing, coining the term,
“Nursing Informatics”, which they defined as
“…the application of computer technology to all
fields of nursing---nursing services, nurse
education and nursing research”.
1985 - Kathryn Hannah… Is the use of information technologies in relation to the
nursing functions.
1989 – Graves & Corcoran… Is a combination of computer science, information science
and nursing science designed to assist management and processing nursing data,
information, and knowledge to support the practice of nursing and the delivery of nursing
care.
1994 – ANA… Specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and
information science in identifying, collecting, processing and managing data and
information to support nursing practice, administration, education, research and the expa
nsion of nursing knowledge.
2001 – ANA… A specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science and
information science to manage and communicate data, information and knowledge of
nursing practice.
2001- ANA… Facilitates the integration of data, information, and knowledge to support p
atients, nurses and other providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings. The
support is accomplish through the use of information structures, information processes ,
and information technology.

Group 2 – 1970s and 1980s
Group 3 – 1990s
Group 4 – 2000s
Group 5 – 2010s

After the group discussion, choose a leader/representative and

discuss to the class the HIGHLIGHTS of Nursing Informatics
